Bathing young puppies To the breeders: At what age do you bathe your new puppies? Meaning completely wetting them and lathering up, ect.. I usually give mine a "real" bath at 4 weeks. Before that I wipe them down daily with a warm washcloth (faces, feet, ect.) and do "butt cleanings" with baby wipes. I was just curious how others go about this. I'm always so afraid they will get too cold if I bathe them too soon. There's nothing more pitiful in my eyes than a shivering, cold, 4 week old puppy and a hair dryer! Even on the lowest setting and holding it way off from the baby's body, they still look so pitiful and scared. But I also want them fresh and clean... Mom(s) do a good job usually, but they do tend to get a stinky smell if I don't step in... |
Robbie, The earliest I've bathe is about 10 wks. Before then I ususally maintain the coat and keep them clean by spraying a leave in conditioner and then drying under the blow dryer. |
10 wks...wow! I've never waited that long. I really don't think I could as much as mine like to walk through, roll around in, and of course stand in their food. I guess we all do things differently :) |

lol at the "spit shine clean". My mom does the same with her babies.......one drawback......mom's breath is horrible!! I've tried different things. Do you have any suggestions? |

I didn't mean that I completely saturated my 4 wk pups with shampoo...I don't use shampoo on their faces/heads until they are getting close to 8 wks plus. I use a washcloth on faces and butts up until then. Even though mom does keep mine clean, I wouldn't call it "spit shine clean" LOL. there is still a smell! :D So...I do wash their bodies in a mild shampoo prior to reaching 8 or so weeks. :) |
Have you ever noticed, though that the first REAL bath it takes a while and a couple of repeats to lather them up? With mine, I used baby shampoo for the first bath and I swear, I have to rinse and repeat at least 2 times. |
