Weaning Advice Needed Hello, I'm having an issue with my young Yorkie mommy not weaning her pups who are 8 going on 9 weeks old. The puppies are already eating wet puppy food but they still attack their mother for milk whenever they can. Rather than weaning them as she should, she is taken over by them and sits and cries as they drink from her. No doubt they are hurting her with their teeth but I feel she is overpowered, young, and actually needs help with weaning them. She simply just sits and takes it and only moves if called. This weekend (Fri-Mon) I attempted to keep the puppies separated from her via baby gate and entertain both. They ate their puppy food no problem but the mom would try and nurse them even through the baby gate separating them. I feel as though 8 going on 9 weeks is way too long for this to be going on. I am in serious need of advice. |
I am certainly no expert, and those with actual experience will surely respond; but I think I have heard of putting a newborn baby's onsie on the mother so they can't get to her. Good luck, and keep us updated with how you do. |
Let your momma wean her babies!!! This is suckling time that is also necessary for personality develpment and security. Your babies need this bonding and teaching with momma. This is why you leave them until they are 12 - 14 weeks old. Continue to allow them to eat puppy food, but dont rob them of the suckling instinct. Let your momma do what God has programmed her to do!!! She will wean them off her without you getting involved. |

To the OP, as I said, I have no experience, so do listen to the breeders that know, like Yorkiemom1 |
Back when my MIL bred Mallorquin rater pups (a toy breed of the island), she kept two female pups from her last litter, and they nursed right up until almost 10 weeks old. The momma will wean them herself and donŽt worry, sheŽll teach them to leave her alone once she feels sheŽs done ;) I remember feeling so bad for her too.SheŽd be sitting resting and suddenly her pups would come along, literally charge at her and then dive right in.Sometimes sheŽd even yelp! (sometimes theyŽd knock her over too). Eventually she started nipping/growling at them and they understood momma :D Sometimes youŽll want to step in, but believe me, dogs are FANTASTIC mothers (animals in general are fastinating with thier young). They could teach us a thing or two :D |
I let my mommas decided when to wean their pups. Some will not let them nurse past 8 week or 9 weeks and other might let them nurse until the pups are 12 weeks old. It is similar to weaning a child. Some children need a bottle longer than others. I also have observed that the tinier pups tend to need their mommas longer. Often the female might have very little milk but the pups still want to nurse just for the satisfaction of suckling their momma. Please make sure you have trimmed your puppies toenails. The toenails get very sharp and that can be more painful than the teeth. You can use people toenail clippers to clip the little sharp points off the puppies nail. |
