Why is she doing this??? Bellas pups are a week old and they are all doing great, she is a great mother for the most part, but there is one problem. She'll feed all of her pups and she's devoted to them all, but every now and again, when we turn our backs, she'll push one puppy out of her bed and right away onto the cold floor  She's done this 3 times this past week - just now I found this pup under my bed!!! :( She had pushed her away and under there and just left her there. The pup is fine and Bella is feeding her, so why is she doing this every now and again??? I havent left the house for a week and now I feel like I simply shouldent just in case she does this whilst I'm not here :( Why is she fine about feeding this particular pup 95% of the time, but every now and again she just excludes her like that?? |
I really doubt she is pushing the puppy out. What kind of whelping box are you using? Weeks old puppies can crawl pretty good so I bet the puppy is either crawling out or is being pulled out if the pup is latched on a teat when the momma leaves the whelping box. |

The thing is, we´ve tried moving Bella to her actual whelping area (it has a wooden box with higher edges etc) but she will not be anywhere else but her bed, she didnt even want to give birth in her whelping area which is why she ended up doing that on my bed.The times we have tried to move her, she moves her pups out of there and takes them back to where her bed is *sigh* |
Do you have Bella confined to a small area? If not then you need to set something up. I always keep my new mommas in a big x-pen with the whelping box on one end. They have their food and water and potty pads in the rest of the area. That way the momma can leave the box when she wants to but she can't move the pups to another area. When the pups are about 3 1/2 weeks old I remove the whelping box and just setup a bigger area for them with their bedding on one end, potty pads on one end and food and water in the middle. Once the puppies are walking a slowly enlarge the area they are able to walk in but I keep a board up dividing the area so mom can always get away from the puppies when she wants to. |
Yes, exactly what bjh said; I think an x-pen is a must. Mine is always set up much the same. I use an under the bed storage box for mom & pups which takes up a good portion of one side of the 4x4 pen. The other half I have always placed a piece of carpet remnant big enough to cover it. That is for "just in case" a pup should get drug out, it would not be left on the cold floor. The first few weeks I sleep in that spare room with mom & pups until I know they can retain their body heat and are doing well. The box is replaced with a doggie bed at about 4 weeks old....or when I notice that they are climbing out of the box, ready to explore!. |
