Pregnancy questions I have a question. My girl had a temp drop yesterday at 7am of 98.4 at 1pm it went back up to 99.0 and till I went to bed at 11pm. This morning at 7 am it was 98.2 and has stayed there. It is 2pm now. I called off work today and I'm wondering if this is gonna happen anytime soon? Opinions? This is day 62 |
Bellas temp was all over the place at the end.It would drop then go up, then drop again.The day she went into labour her temp went down in the morning, then at lunchtime (3pm) it was up again, so we didnt think it was "it" yet. We didnt get to take her temp again because at 7pm she literally bumped into labour..like out of nowhere.2 hours later there were 3 yorkie pups in the world lol. I was expecting a warning, like panting, digging, temp drop that stayed down for 3+ hours etc.NOTHING :rolleyes: |
Though a temp drop is a good tool to use in anticipating whelp time, it can also make you crazy! As Ginas_babys said, temps can fluctuate all over for a few days and different females can and may act differently as whelp approaches. Temp drop also will mean labor can happen within 24 hours, so not necessarily that day. When labor is imminent with my girls (meaning within 12-24 hours), they will have a temp drop along with a definite loss of appetite. At day 62 your girl may have been close, but I would not be surprised if she was toying with you and made you wait another day or two. Has she had them yet? |

This is why you need to know exactly when your female was bred, and then you need to start watching her intently for a week before she is due to deliver....she may or may NOT have any of all the little indications she is about to start....I had a female that used to walk around, eating and drinking and playing and having a ball, never once did her temp drop or spike, never once did sahe go off food/water, never showed nesting behavior any more than she normally liked to root and arrange bedding.....and she would eat dinner, and just calmly walk over to her bed and drop out a puppy! She had them at 9:30 that night 10/3 ! Three girls all super small. One is still scaring me because she's so tiny |
Congratulations.......Now, YOUR work begins......how small are the babies? Are you prepared to step in and help any of these babies that need the help, survive? At the very least, you need to be watching these babies around the clock, making sure they are being kept warm, being cared for by momma and not shoved to the side, and are nursing enough to keep them alive...... |

I sound like a broken record, but I am telling you, if you want to give this baby every chance in the world to survive, you would not do any better than to supplement this baby with tube feedings. Tube feedings are exact and accurate and safer than eye droppers and even bottles, which the baby can aspirate formula into its lungs..... You work for a vet, the vet can show you how to do this. Since momma is nursing the baby and caring for the baby, you should not have to feed baby but maybe 4 times in 24 hours....just to help give a little extra boost to what baby is already getting....not enough to keep baby full, because you dont want baby to stop nursing on momma....just a couple of cc's 3-4 times in the 24 hours period, to give extra calories and nutrition. |
