Trying to find a good place to get a puppy As it's been a few weeks since my dog died, we've been looking around to find a puppy. Can anyone recommend a good safe place in the South Jersey or Philly area? We'd like another yorkie but I'm also into any mix like a morkie, a yorkie poo, a shorkie. Anything like that. Please get in touch with me if you have any recommendations! |
Start with the YTCA websit. There is a page that links to members in your area that can get you started in your search. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America There is also lots of great info in this thread about finding a great breeder. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...e-breeder.html And please consider adopting from a rescue and giving a pup a second chance, especially if a mixed breed is what you are looking for. Good luck in your search. |
Oh, I forgot to add to please be careful. You will undoubtably get lots of PM's from breeders offering you a pup. Please be aware that just because they have joined YT is no guarantee that they are a reputable breeder. Some here are absolutely awesome. Others, not so much and use this site to line their pockets. Use the same scrutiny in checking them out as you would any other breeder you might run across. |
Thank you! We have considered rescue dogs too. |
I love the idea of you considering a rescue, especially if you are looking at a mix! I just can not justify in my mind, anyone having to pay a breeder for a mix, when there are sooooooooo many of these precious babies available in rescues! Good for you! |
I know. It is crazy to pay a lot of money for a mix. I do love the idea of rescuing but they're usually older and we want one to raise. We aren't ruling it out though. |
If I were looking for another dog I would start looking at some of my local rescues and shelters. Please help save a life and open up more room at one of your local shelters for another dog that is in need by rescuing. I just rescued a pregnant dog off the street and am trying to get help for her unborn puppies ahead of time and so many shelters are full. |
You can check out the ytca.org. No reputable breeder will sell a mix so if you want a mix the best place to go is a shelter. |
You might be (sadly) surprised at how many very young dogs are in rescues. Even a dog of 1 or 2 is still very much a puppy, especially with toy breeds. Yes, the puppies do go faster than a slightly older dog, but all ages are available. |
Hello and welcome to YT. I am so sorry for your loss. Please check our the local rescues in the area. There is a lot in the NJ area. |
hang in there- i think this might be a bit of a long one... Quote:
this lady i used to know used to breed dogs- a lot. so she was well known for having loads of dogs, so, sometimes if the nearby shelter was full or closed she would find dogs tied to her gate, but people knew they could leave a dog with her and she wouldn't ask questions. (she started off a fairly good hobby breeder, but got a little overwhelmed over time and became a little too commercial for my liking.) anyway, dexter was one of them; the lady had left him with her OH when she went and came back to find him in a sorry state so she left him at the breeders to be re-homed. knowing i had always wanted a chihuahua, the breeder (once she got him to a good weight etc) gave me a call and asked if i wanted him and i said of course, but missys litter were just 8 weeks at this point, so i'd have to see how he behaved etc. when i brought him home and introduced him he rolled onto his back for the 6 pups to climb over him! he's had a tough time of it apparently- and when we took him he needed over £300 in dental work done from a bad diet and lack of care- he was only 2-3yrs old! (since he was a private re-home i paid, but if you adopt through rescue things like that will already be taken care of). but as soon as you take a seat while he's near he'll be up like a shot to get on your knee for a cuddle... he's always closeby if you need him and if you're sad he cuddles in close to you. when i moved out on my own (2 years after getting Dexter) the plan was that my 2 girls and Dexx came with, but my dad actually cried at the thought of Dexter leaving, and Dexx licked him in the face to stop him, so my Dex stayed with dad  but in the words of Amy Pond... http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6bec1e03.jpg (had hoped the pic would have shown!) |

I agree about Petfinder, we found our little guy Pickles (our 2nd yorkie) at a rescue on Petfinder - he was just over a year old at the time. He's the biggest sweetheart! |
