It's the head/pelvic ratio that you need to be aware of. This is one of the reasons for doing an xray in the first place and I would think that if you vet thought that the pups were going to be to big for your girl to pass naturally, he would have said so and talked about doing a c section. So, as the other's have asked, what did your vet say???
It is better for the pups & mom to whelp naturally if possible, so if your vet was not concerned, I would try going that way, having your vet on stand-by when the time comes in case he/she is needed. | I actually take calipers and MEASURE the heads of the babies and the pelvic ring, to make sure they are going to get through the birth canal. Hopefully, your vet is experienced with deliveries, and is knowledgable about doing these measurements. I would be going back to the vet, pull those xrays, and have him measure those heads....THEN, if he says he thinks they will pass without difficulty, hopefully you can trust that. If it is going to be a tight squeeze NOW, remember, they are still growing for another 3-5 days! If it is already a tight squeeze, it will be tighter in another 4 days....I alswys err on the side of caution. I have a vet on call for my whelpings...it takes my vet and an anesthesiologist and me about 8 minutes to get to her office....I do not know what kind of emergent care you have access to.....I personally, prefer "controlled crashes" , and will schedule c-sections if my mommas life is even in question of being at risk during a whelping. You have to be aware of your particular situation, your vets qualifications and how much you trust him to pull your momma through an emergency. |
