is it possible she is in heat? hi my 10 month girl had her first season in march..it lasted a month. i am planning to get her spayed after her next season as i don't want (or didn't i should say as you will find out) she is showing no signs of being in estrus but yesterday her brother a direct litter mate mounted her i did not see a tie but there was a yelp and "evidence". i asked the vet if it is possible she is still in heat they said it could be dominance. i have heard of a "silent" heat but there isn't any swelling are there any other symptoms i should look for? and if she was mated what would be the safest course of action for her? the 2 pups never sleep in the same crate and i never leave them unsupervised together except this one time when i nipped to the loo :( |
I agree with the vet. Most likely the male was just trying to have his way with his sister and she yelped because he was hurting her. How big is your female? Honestly I think it would probably be best to have her spayed before her next heat. |
she is about 4 kg (8lb) and her brother is 2kg (about 4lb). i'll see what the vet says about when to spay. if it is a silent heat i'll have to wait 3 months for the hormones to settle. i'll know(the expensive way) in 2 months if he got lucky :(. is there a test they can do to find out if she is in heat? |
If she was just in heat back in March I doubt seriously that she would be having a silent heat now. If she is not bleeding or swollen then I really doubt anything happened. If you had her spayed now then you would not have anymore worries. |
I agree, spay her now if that is/was your plan. At 10 months of age and 8 lbs there really is no reason to wait....or even to have waited this long. Most spay their non-breeding females before their first heat. |
The little begger just tried again....i will be getting her booked in in the morning. it is a behavior i have not come across before. could it be some sort of split heat? |

i got her checked at the vet and she is not in heat... it is a phantom pregnancy. the vet put her on her back and squeezed a nipple and got milk in/near his face  she is on a course of pills to help stop the milk and is booked in for a spay next week;) the vet said if she was an only dog she would be collecting "puppies" and some males confuse the smell she gives off with her being in season:D |
