Breeder questions It's been a long time since I've gone through the process of adopting a new dog. 20 years ago we brought home a $25 mutt who was a wonderful member of the family for 16 years. This time around My fiance and I are looking at a Yorkie, from Whitecliff Yorkies, and I'm a bit lost on how things work now. I've done some research, but am concerned about a few small things. We are going to meet the dog tomorow, but the breeder wants to meet away from the home, as it's being reno'ed. I haven't found anything online that is good or bad about this place, just the same info the breeder put out. She has been upfront with the info that the dog has a slight overbite, and is 8 months old. She is only asking $500. She did send some pics to me via email. The Canadian Kenel club doesn't list it's members online, but she claims to be a member, and if she is following the rules the dog will be chipped with vet papers, but what else should I ask for? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. |
Alright, I can offer you my advice and what I know. 1) CKC registered dogs don't HAVE to be chipped. I don't think there is any kennel club that requires this. If she claims to be a CKC breeder, ask ahead of time for the registered litter number and numbers for the parents. Call the CKC to verify the information BEFORE even meeting her. If she is truly legit, she shouldn't object to this at all...if she does, big warning sign. I question the fact that she doesn't want you coming to the home, despite claims that it is being renovated. Sounds like she is trying to hide something bigger that a house being redone. Also, it is very important to see the parents and where the pup has been raised, IMO. If the dog is already 8 mo old and has been raised in a less-than-desirable home, or abused, God forbid, it may have some serious problems you need to be aware of. Hope these suggestions help! I would be concerned about her wanting to meet away from the home. I ran into this while looking and I tried to sidestep their request to meet elsewhere and when I did, wow....was shocked when they became upset and let me know their dogs are housed in a 250000. building and are a topnotch breeder...after the woman's outburst I promptly hung up but did more research, found the link below..and reported them to the ethical breeding org. I would never buy a Yorkie if you can't see where it was raised the past 8 months and what the parents look like. IMO those 2 things are MOST important when buying a puppy. Too many questionables... Good luck! |

If she don't want you to go to her home , it is probably that she have too many dogs , or she don't keep her place clean . |
I'd be concerned that she doesn't want you to come to her home. I would think that most GOOD breeders would welcome you into their home and be proud to show off their dogs. |

Well thanks all for the suggestions. I really appreciate the opinions and ideas from people who have the dogs interest at heart. Punkin came home with us the other day. The breeder is less breeder and more dog lover. Punkin was cared for very much. She has a great understanding of what it is to be spoiled. She knows a few things like fetch and speak up when you have to go out. So far everything the woman told us has been accurate, inclluding the dogs personality. Punkin doesn't like the food bowl we bought her, instead she prefers the ziplock reusable dish. She likes her bed and walks, especially in the carry along bag. She was in the country before, and we are downtown, so the noises are all new and scary to her. Thanks for the replies again, I'm sure we will be back with questions again. p.s.
