Get me caught up on what all you have already done for the last 56 days, to prepare for this whelping....I am sure you have not gotten to this point and not gotten prepared with supplies and knowledge........no time to waste going over every effort you have already made to ensure the safety of your momma and the puppies. |
I have a whelping box for her, I also have been feeding her puppy food which the vet told me to. And i have been taking her temperature everyday. |

Do you know what she bred to? Obviously you know when it happened, since you know she's day 56. There is much to do, read, and buy to get ready. |
Do a simple Google Search for Debbie Jensens videos and website on whelping and preparing for same. Labour signs should be delineated out there. Or conversely you could do a simple search in this forum, for this and other questions you might have. It does sound like with only a whelping box as the sum total of your preparation other than puppy food, you have a long way to go to prepare yourself. If this is indeed true, may I highly recommend you let the vet whelp the pups and or get in touch with a whelping coach. There are simply too many situations to try to cover them all in about 6 days for you to absorb all this information. How to find a whelping coach? Start with your vet and see if she has any referrals for you. Search out your local toy breed club association, obedience club, or even a local Yorkshire Terrier association, or a more general breed club association; and beg for help! Added to the response on whelping supplies, is get a small scale, pups will need to be weighed daily. Also directions to the vet preprogrammed in your GPS. You need a heating lamp as well. Startt getting in your supplies now, and also for your family. You will need to be with these pups 24/7 for at least the first week. So make up food for you and your family and freeze it. Keep your car at full gas levels etc from now until at least one month from now. I do hope for lots of luck in this whelp for your bitch and her puppies. |
Start gathering what you wilol need to raise orphaned pups in case that becomes an option. You could also just have to assist a pup with eating if it is not for whatever reason, eating or getting enough to eat. There are recepies for a variety of formulas on here...you need to add ingredients to canned comercial puppy formula, as the canned puppy formula does not really deliver the calories/oz needed. It would be a blessing for those babies if you can learn to tube feed them....much more effective way to control exactly how many calories and nurtition they are getting, plus it cuts down on the possibility of aspiration pneumonia....good luck....you are like cramming an entire semister of physics, into an overnight study session for a major final. |
Thanks for the help. 4 puppies were born today. Healthy!!! They are adorable Morkies |
