New Litter Questions Thursday night, April 25, 2013, my two year old Yorkie Dixie gave birth to four little girls. I lost the smallest one that weighed only 1.7 ounces by the next night. We still have three little girls that are growing each day. I'm wanting to ask other breeders when they vaccinate their litters and with what. Dixie is 4.2 lbs and Flip is 4.7 lbs. Dixie had reaction as a puppy so I always have her pretreated before she gets any shots. |
Congratulations on your new litter. I am sorry you lost your little one. It would probably be best to discuss the vaccinations with your vet. For myself, I never give any vaccinations before the puppies are 8 weeks old and with the smaller pups I wait longer. I also never give the lepto shot. Keep in mine that some vets do over vaccinate so I recommend you doing some research on the dangers of over vaccination. |
I would be very cautious giving your babies vaccinations...simply because mommas reaction to vaccines could possibly have been passed onto those babies via immune system and they too may have reactions. I would have the vet do the vaccinations on these babies. The cost of the vaccinations given by the vet is negligable when balanced by the possible loss of any of those babies due to a reaction. Please be sure if you place those babies in homes, that the new owners are aware of moms reaction to vaccinations, so that in the future these new owners can be prepared to do whatever their own vets may think is necessary to vaccinate them safely, if anything. I know only too well, as an RN, drug reactions can be fatal, and I do not take any chances with the possibility of this happening. |
Mom's reaction to vaccines are of concern. And yes future puppy owners should know of it, even if they get through without incident their first set of shots. I follow Dr Jean Dodd's protocol on vaccinations. With my more mature dogs, shots are separated and I titer for the Rabies vaccination. |
