New home is 5.5 hr away. What to send with her for a safe travel ? I've never had one of my pups going to a family so far from home before. One of my pups will be making a 5.5 hr trip from Ohio to WV to their new home. I want to be totally sure that she will be safe during her journey. Below is a list of item I will be sending with her on her trip. Second series of shots Bottle water & bowel Food Nutrical Puppy Blanket Instruction to stop every 1.5 - 2 hrs (for a potty break and to stretch her legs). I will be emailing info on Hypoglycemic Shock for them to review before they arrive. I am wondering if I should suggest that she get plenty of rest for at least the first 2 hrs after arriving home. Is there is anything that I am missing, if so can you suggest anything else that she might need ? Thank you for any input . . . |
That's about how far it was for me to pick up Ruby and Rosie. Liked everything you have... B 1. At first I was going to say a leash and harness for potty breaks. As i forgot for both dogs when I picked them up BUT...I didn't stop for Ruby for potty break/stretches and I probably wouldnt have stopped as she hadn't completed her puppy shots so I didn't want her on ground that I was unfamiliar with (worried if any sick dogs had been there.) SO...I would suggest you have them bring a crate with puppy pads and let her go potty on the pad. Something for puppy to chew on. Breeder gave me something for Ruby to chew on and when she wasn't sleeping she spent a good portion of the ride home chewing on it. Let the pups spend time on the blanket going home with this puppy so it smells like her siblings. My breeder also suggested I limit taking her places and people coming over to see her for the first week to allow her time to get accustomed to her new home. It was the piece advice I didn't listen to because I got Ruby the day before Christmas eve. I think thats why she got hypoglycemia because we were running running running that first weekend she was home. I bet that new family is soooooo excited to get thevpuppy home!!! |
I also packed some paper towels and a garbage bag in case mine got sick in the car on the way home. |
Since the pup hasn't been fully vaccinated, they should be careful with the potty breaks to avoid exposure to any contaminants, like at rest stops. |

I was going to suggest some wipes and a plastic bag in case of car sickness. And maybe a stuffed animal or something she can snuggle up against if she'll be alone/without another dog. |
How old is she? IMO she should have had her 2nd vaccination before she leaves. |
They need to know not to have the pup places strange dogs have been. Personally I think an under 12 week pup is to young for the stress of a trip. |

I think you should take her to her new family this way these inexperienced new owners(?) don't have that added stress. You could drive them and surely if anything went awry you would know what to do? |
We had a 6 hour drive with Max when he was 12/13 weeks old. He didn't want to potty until we got to the house and gave him a pad. If your pups have not been introduced to outdoor potty, make sure the family has a pad to offer the pup. Also, Max scared me because he refused to drink any water for hours. I finally discovered that he wouldn't drink out of the plastic travel bowls because he was accustomed to stainless steel. Whatever the pups are used to, make sure the new family has the same. |
It was (theoretically) a 3.5 hour trip when I went to pick up Sam and Piper. I had blankets, sweaters (January), travel crate, harnesses, leashes, disposable pee pads, and NutriCal. We didn't use the leashes, harnesses, or crate. I just laid the pee pad out in the back of my Escape when we made a stop. When we were traveling, my daughter held Sam and Mom held Piper all the way home. Just pray that the new family's car doesn't break down on the way home like mine did, LOL. Our 3.5 hour trip turned in to more like 8 or 9 hours. |
I was wondering if you included any potty pads so if/when she needs to potty there is a sanitary surface at hand? Just a thought. We had a potty pad on the floor in the car when we brought Princess Sophie home, just in case. Oh, we had all the other stuff you mentioned too. LOL |

Plus I hadn't considers the water dish. They drink out of glass because less chance of them tipping it over. I'll try switching to something different this week and see how they all react. Thanks for all the great tips ! |
Looks like you have it all figured out!! Wishing safe travels for one of your babies!! |
We picked up Thalia this last weekend - 6 hour drive but it turned into 11 after all the stops and breaks. She was perfect! No accidents, peed a couple of times on breaks (breeder provided pee pads) and pretty much slept the entire way. :) I think their baby will be fine on the drive home! |
I went back to see where I had missed where your puppies were 8 weeks. Actually, I was thinking it probably wasn't even Yorkies because they were so young. Then I found your thread where you had found families. I had seen your title before but hadn't read it. I had guessed you were happy they were spoken for. I never imagined they were leaving home. I am so upset, I am shaking! You've never heard of the YTCA? The VERY club that sets the standards for responsble Yorkshire Terrier breeding? YOU decided when it was time to wean to give them independence? They're leaving because YOU taught them manners? Your smallest puppy going to WV is 1 lb 10 oz? She's not going to gain much in the next week and 1/2. She is so little and fragile! You are an active member here, and I am shocked at the total disregard of what responsible breeding is all about and taught on this site. You don't have to respond and I am done too. I already know your response, I've seen it in the other thread. I'm sorry admin. This is one thread I just couldn't turn the other cheek. Wishing your puppies luck with their new homes. |

I haven't read her other threads... but by the sound of it this pup is leaving at 10 weeks, not 8. I don't know about the weight... I hope they'll be at least 2 lbs |
I will stay on track with the original topic since I have already been down this road and have addressed concerns in previous threads. I want to thank those of you who answered my questions. Your replies were very helpful. I've added some papers, paper towels and zip lock baggies to her travel kit. Plus I will suggest that they bring a travel carrier for her to do her business in. Thanks so much |

When I got Honey it was about a 2 1/2 hour drive. She had just hit 12 weeks and she was maybe 1lb if that. Everything thing you said you are sending is mostly everything the breeder sent with me. She told me to bring a blanket to rap her in on the way back home. She gave me a week worth of food and a toy that they had been playing with. She told me not to let her out until she got home to pee on her pee pad. Honey had only had her first set of shots and I had to get the other ones a week later. It seems like you are sending everything that is needed for their trip. |

I think she'll be fine on the drive up - for the parents' sake, I hope Kaylee will be like my Thalia who slept the whole way :D |
