New home is 5.5 hr away. What to send with her for a safe travel ?

I've never had one of my pups going to a family so far from home before. One of my pups will be making a 5.5 hr trip from Ohio to WV to their new home. I want to be totally sure that she will be safe during her journey. Below is a list of item I will be sending with her on her trip.

Second series of shots
Bottle water & bowel
Food
Nutrical Puppy
Blanket
Instruction to stop every 1.5 - 2 hrs
(for a potty break and to stretch her legs).

I will be emailing info on Hypoglycemic Shock for them to review before they arrive.

I am wondering if I should suggest that she get plenty of rest for at least the first 2 hrs after arriving home. Is there is anything that I am missing, if so can you suggest anything else that she might need ?

Thank you for any input . . .

That's about how far it was for me to pick up Ruby and Rosie. Liked everything you have...
B
1. At first I was going to say a leash and harness for potty breaks. As i forgot for both dogs when I picked them up BUT...I didn't stop for Ruby for potty break/stretches and I probably wouldnt have stopped as she hadn't completed her puppy shots so I didn't want her on ground that I was unfamiliar with (worried if any sick dogs had been there.) SO...I would suggest you have them bring a crate with puppy pads and let her go potty on the pad.

Something for puppy to chew on. Breeder gave me something for Ruby to chew on and when she wasn't sleeping she spent a good portion of the ride home chewing on it.

Let the pups spend time on the blanket going home with this puppy so it smells like her siblings.

My breeder also suggested I limit taking her places and people coming over to see her for the first week to allow her time to get accustomed to her new home. It was the piece advice I didn't listen to because I got Ruby the day before Christmas eve. I think thats why she got hypoglycemia because we were running running running that first weekend she was home.

I bet that new family is soooooo excited to get thevpuppy home!!!

I also packed some paper towels and a garbage bag in case mine got sick in the car on the way home.

Since the pup hasn't been fully vaccinated, they should be careful with the potty breaks to avoid exposure to any contaminants, like at rest stops.

Thats a good idea, but knowing how excited they will be to finally be taking her home. I doubt that that will happen. I will definetly suggest that thou.

Those two things are already included in her puppy packet.

That is normally something that anyone with a new pup would do. I have already told them about not having her around any other dogs or people with dogs before she has had all of her shots.

Yes, they are getting very excited !!

I was going to suggest some wipes and a plastic bag in case of car sickness. And maybe a stuffed animal or something she can snuggle up against if she'll be alone/without another dog.

Amazing Yorkies 04-09-2013 03:09 PM

How old is she? IMO she should have had her 2nd vaccination before she leaves.

Lovetodream88 04-09-2013 03:21 PM

They need to know not to have the pup places strange dogs have been. Personally I think an under 12 week pup is to young for the stress of a trip.

What if she is sore from her shots? I would imagine that would make the trip and getting picked up by you new family uncomfortable if not painful.

Thanks for your concern Taylor but I have already spoken to my vet about her taking the trip. We have even made sure that her shots will be the day before she leaves. That way I have plenty of time to see if she is having a reaction to the meds and can postpone the trip if necessary. So not to add to any stress or car sickness she could have.

Ruby had some of her shots the day before I picked her up. Breeder showed me where she got the shot so I was careful but she did just fine.

Callie screams if I hit the place she got a shot when I pick her up after a shot

Does your vet specialize in toy breeds?

I think you should take her to her new family this way these inexperienced new owners(?) don't have that added stress. You could drive them and surely if anything went awry you would know what to do?

Maximo 04-09-2013 04:40 PM

We had a 6 hour drive with Max when he was 12/13 weeks old. He didn't want to potty until we got to the house and gave him a pad. If your pups have not been introduced to outdoor potty, make sure the family has a pad to offer the pup.

Also, Max scared me because he refused to drink any water for hours. I finally discovered that he wouldn't drink out of the plastic travel bowls because he was accustomed to stainless steel. Whatever the pups are used to, make sure the new family has the same.

MyDearSam 04-09-2013 04:43 PM

It was (theoretically) a 3.5 hour trip when I went to pick up Sam and Piper. I had blankets, sweaters (January), travel crate, harnesses, leashes, disposable pee pads, and NutriCal. We didn't use the leashes, harnesses, or crate. I just laid the pee pad out in the back of my Escape when we made a stop. When we were traveling, my daughter held Sam and Mom held Piper all the way home.

Just pray that the new family's car doesn't break down on the way home like mine did, LOL. Our 3.5 hour trip turned in to more like 8 or 9 hours.

Ldyrev1 04-09-2013 04:51 PM

I was wondering if you included any potty pads so if/when she needs to potty there is a sanitary surface at hand? Just a thought. We had a potty pad on the floor in the car when we brought Princess Sophie home, just in case. Oh, we had all the other stuff you mentioned too. LOL

They are very farmilar with animals, they have had animals all their lives. Plus the new daddy is a volenteer parimedic. Which takes some of that what if off my mind. I think handing her over to them in my/her own home the only place that she has ever known would be best. That way its a one time thing. She only has to be in one strainge vehical and not several. I dont want her to be in to many unfarmiliar and scarry situations durring the transfer.

She's paper trained so I will definitely add some papers to her travel bag.

Plus I hadn't considers the water dish. They drink out of glass because less chance of them tipping it over. I'll try switching to something different this week and see how they all react.

Thanks for all the great tips !

Looks like you have it all figured out!!

Wishing safe travels for one of your babies!!

brezofleur 04-09-2013 07:35 PM

We picked up Thalia this last weekend - 6 hour drive but it turned into 11 after all the stops and breaks. She was perfect! No accidents, peed a couple of times on breaks (breeder provided pee pads) and pretty much slept the entire way. :)

I think their baby will be fine on the drive home!

Amazing Yorkies 04-09-2013 08:21 PM

I went back to see where I had missed where your puppies were 8 weeks. Actually, I was thinking it probably wasn't even Yorkies because they were so young. Then I found your thread where you had found families. I had seen your title before but hadn't read it. I had guessed you were happy they were spoken for. I never imagined they were leaving home.
I am so upset, I am shaking! You've never heard of the YTCA? The VERY club that sets the standards for responsble Yorkshire Terrier breeding?
YOU decided when it was time to wean to give them independence? They're leaving because YOU taught them manners?
Your smallest puppy going to WV is 1 lb 10 oz? She's not going to gain much in the next week and 1/2. She is so little and fragile!
You are an active member here, and I am shocked at the total disregard of what responsible breeding is all about and taught on this site.
You don't have to respond and I am done too. I already know your response, I've seen it in the other thread. I'm sorry admin. This is one thread I just couldn't turn the other cheek.
Wishing your puppies luck with their new homes.

That seems very strange to me but then again a puppy could survive at 8 weeks so they would say it would be fine to send them at 8 weeks but in reality what is best for the pup is to stay until 12 weeks. I would think that a toy breed vet would know that smaller breeds develop slower then larger breeds and need the extra time with there mom.

brezofleur 04-09-2013 08:38 PM

I haven't read her other threads... but by the sound of it this pup is leaving at 10 weeks, not 8. I don't know about the weight... I hope they'll be at least 2 lbs

dawn27 04-10-2013 09:24 AM

I will stay on track with the original topic since I have already been down this road and have addressed concerns in previous threads.

I want to thank those of you who answered my questions. Your replies were very helpful. I've added some papers, paper towels and zip lock baggies to her travel kit. Plus I will suggest that they bring a travel carrier for her to do her business in.

Thanks so much

Yes (Kaylee) will be 10 weeks when she leave us. All the pups that have already gone to their new home were between 2-3lbs. Two of the three remaining pups are also over 2lbs or over. The smallest (Kaylee) who is the pup who will be headed to WV should be at 2lbs or very close to it. She s 1lb 12oz now and she normally gains about 3-4oz per week. We still have 9 days before she leaves us.

Princess keke 04-10-2013 09:37 AM

When I got Honey it was about a 2 1/2 hour drive. She had just hit 12 weeks and she was maybe 1lb if that. Everything thing you said you are sending is mostly everything the breeder sent with me. She told me to bring a blanket to rap her in on the way back home. She gave me a week worth of food and a toy that they had been playing with. She told me not to let her out until she got home to pee on her pee pad. Honey had only had her first set of shots and I had to get the other ones a week later. It seems like you are sending everything that is needed for their trip.

There we are. :)

I think she'll be fine on the drive up - for the parents' sake, I hope Kaylee will be like my Thalia who slept the whole way :D
