I am very very sorry that I judged you earlier. I hope you have an incident free whelp and you can come on here if you have any questions if something just doesnt seem right and get info but mainly listen to your vet because he is there to help you through this |
On the subject of food-did you say she eats raw, and used to a raw diet? I would recommend slowly switching her to a "cooked" version, and most especially after pups are borne I would want her on cooked food - this is to diminish any risks to puppies. A raw food diet can contain bacteria that would not be healthy for young pups. Puppy food I don't start until the last week, and I agree no calcium supplements now, but for sure after whelping. A nice scrambled egg has all (usually) all the calcium she will need, as an additive to her food. I agree that travelling with this pregnant dog is quite frankly so risky I would not even see it as an option. Breeders quite simply stay home unless there is a life or death emergency, and we usually have a few breeder friends we can ask to help out Your vet either the new one or the old one, may be able to suggest a breeder who would be either a) willing to whelp your dog at their house and keep the newborns through the critical 2wk period- and if so I would board the dog with her starting at least one week before due date. b) willing to be available to you 24/7 to whelp this litter at your home. c) they might also be willing to loan you the use of their whelping equipment so that you don't have to go out and get everything. d) refer you to a reproduction vet who may have the facilities and offer this service to you. Alternatively you can look up a Toy Breed club in your state/area, and contact breeders through them, who might be willing to offer their services. In either case if you are not going to be physically present you will need to make arrangements of a financial nature with a vet in case of whelping emergencies, and the visit on the second day for dewclaw removal and or tail docking. Plus puppies need their wellness checks. Plus of course your whelping coach should be paid as well. I truly urge you to move heaven and earth now to get the help you will need. There is just so much to share about danger signs, preventative care, that it is hard to even begin. There are how-ever many many threads on here about breeding that have much good information on them. |

I can't read through all the threads right now...plus the whole thing has me a little annoyed..see I love Yorkies, I love all animals, I'm not a freak...but I've learned that you have to treat them like they were the living breathing important pets that they are...you wouldn't put off taking your child for a checkup etc.,so in the nicest kindest way, your lackadaisical attitude is a little unsettling to me...please stick around YT and read, learn and make some new friends...your at an advantage right now...you found us, use us, please! Now as I said I can't read through the threads right now and I see some of our best breeders are here to help you already, I just want to know did you get ahold of the breeder? If you don't get ahold of the breeder for help try to get ahold of another breeder, someone or stay home and close to YT, because the situation is not as simple as you think. An emergency can arise quickly putting the life of your beloved pet and pups at risk. I'm sorry, right now you need to get educated fully! Honestly, I really hope this works out, if your dedicated to your dog, as she is to you, it will! Welcome to YT! |
Good luck to you and your mommy to be! This should be an exciting time for you! Kinda like having human kids or grandkids when they are not planned...you love them the same. I'm sure you and mommy will do fine! There are alot of people on this site that will be glad to help you through this. |

It looks like Deb Sillers has offered to help with the whelp if the OP is close to her. That truly would be Amazing:) Easter dinner we thought we might have a whelping problem, and one of our breeder friends who wasn't with us because her girl was due, called in the middle of supper - 3 born nicely - and then STALL - with at least 2 more pups to go. Thankfully after just over an hour - when we were packing up to go over to her house - she started again! Ohew successfull whelp and beautiful babies. Whelping quite simply takes precedence over almost everything. |

Also your whelping coach might advise you to be the first appt of the day, or conversely the last. |
Problem solved! Quote:
She's up to date with Vacs, right? If you decide you want to whelp, I would be happy to help. Feel free to give me a call! |
I like to use a digital thermometer that is wide on one end. It has a digital readout and it beeps when it is ready. Be sure to lubricate it with a little ky jell. I will just lay the female in my lap when I take her temperature. |
This makes me happy. See? I told you we had wonderful breeders here that love these pups so much that they will do anything humanly possible to help. I hope you are discussing the details with Deb now - your mama girl couldn't be in better hands! :) |

You will take Deb Sillers up on a phone offer? Seriously? You have a very respected experienced breeder near to you., you who knows nothing about whelping, breeding and rearing a healthy litter and you are NOT leaping at the chance to have some one of this ilk help you? I am to say the least surprised. If you have such a laissez-faire attitude to whelping, then hey best of luck. And I will tell Deb so, just in case she does not come back to this thread, as she is a very busy woman, and thought she had helped you in a constructive way to safeguard your very at risk gal. |
Sennie just what do you plan? You a new member have come to us for help. And knowingly or not you have been the recipient of many experienced breeders opinions and help. And btw you left this to 2wks before the whelp date. Hey you are nothing if not late to the bar. Do you really actually think experienced breeders who are willing to help are a dime a dozen? Do you have any idea how bloody lucky you are? If you actually think in any way 2 wks before whelp gives you any bloody time to become at least somewhat knowledgeable about the whelping process, the puppy rearing process; then you are sadly deluded. I truly need to say this for all other visitors to this thread. You need to count your blessings. This forum, and this offer, is very unique. Something to be treasured beyond belief. That is it; I have said my peace! and that is not a typo either |

Sennie - I pointed you to this section because I knew these well experienced breeders would move heaven and earth to help your girl and you. With offers to skype with you and then an offer to actually meet up with you and whelp for you (an experienced breeder who doesn't even know you but is willing to do this out of the pure kindness of her heart and love for Yorkies), these ladies sure went above even my own expectations of help. I hope you think about this a lot harder and do what is best for your mama dog. I am not in your shoes and I don't know you so I am going to trust that you want what is best for her because you obviously love her enough to come here looking for help and researching. I guess I'm just at a complete loss as to why you wouldn't want her in the hands of someone who is more than beyond capable of taking care of her and her pups. If this truly is going to be her only whelp - and yours - it's illogical to me for you to do it on your own when you have a FREE offer of help from an experienced breeder. I don't understand that decision. I just ask that you please be sure in your heart that this is not you trying to prove you can do it versus giving the best possible option to your girl. Do you truly believe it is in your girl's best interest to turn down an experienced breeder's help and do this on your own ?(trust me, you can research your tail off as you say, but nothing comes close to real life experience - in anything - not just this) Praying your girl and her pups have a safe delivery. That's really all I can do. I get frustrated when people judge others so I am trying really hard not to do that with you. I'm seriously just at a complete loss. God bless your girl........ |
sooooo let me get this straight... I am a bad pet owner because I do not want to drop my girl off with not only a complete stranger to her but to me as well and walk away then come back in a few weeks? Not be with her when she has her puppies? Seriously who does that? Again I do appreciate the help, I never asked anyone to do it for me, I asked for advice and help. |
I understand your concerns about leaving her with a stranger but Deb is a well respected show breeder not just some backyard breeder. I don't think you really realize the danger your dam is in. The sire is so much bigger and it being her first litter it will be a miracle if she can free whelp and survive. If you need a csection I hope you have the extra 2k for that. We all care deeply for yorkies here and we really care about YT members including yourself. It truly is a blessing having these experienced breeders here to help everyone. I really wish you would reconsider letting Deb help you. Praying for your little dam. God bless. |
