Preparing for a singleton anyday now. Hi so my yorkie is 4.8lbs right now and is only pregnant with one puppy. She has had her vet visits including her xrays and ultrasound and she is in perfect health. I am by no means a breeder and was completely taken by surprise on the news of my dogs pregnancy. I had left her for 10 days with a friend while I was out of town visiting family and her yorkie tied with mine. The vet said the puppy is almost the same size as her birth canal. What are the chances that she will be able to whelp her puppies and not have to get a c section. Anyone else have experience with a small yorkie having puppies. Also iv been researching like crazy so I can have as much knowledge on the subject as I can. I read somewhere that a lot of the time a dam will not go into labor if she has only one puppy.. seeing how I left her for over a week at my friends and neither she knows when they tied how do I know if she is ready to give birth. My vet was only able to give me an estimante of 2 weeks till she gives birth. I'm just worried. Any advice would be great. |
It is especially dangerous for a yorkie under 5 lbs to have pups because she may be too small to whelp them. It is dangerous for any size yorkie to have a singleton because they could grow too large to whelp, best have the vet on stand by. If you could find some breeder available to help you out would be nice too but I dont think your dog is going to be able to free whelp I think she will need a c section |
You have soooooo many uncertainties here...dont know date she is actually due, I am sure you do not have any idea about the pedigrees of either dog, or what is behind them...the fact that your little girl is small, the fact that she is carrying a singleton, the fact you have only guestimations about when the baby is due, and the fact that the vet has said the baby is almost the same size as the birth canal and you have ?? 2 more weeks ?? to go....I would STRONGLY advise you to make arrangements to have your vet available to help deliver this baby.....I mean PRESENT during delivery....things can go south rapidly and you can easily loose not only the baby, but your momma too. Since you do not know WHEN she is due, you cant go ahead and schedule a c-section, because you dont want to dliver a preemie.....Good luck with this unfortunate circumstance. I am stunned and amazed the person you left this little girl with, allowed a female in heat to run with an intact male....the outcome is obviously going to end up as it did.....I would make HER responsible for 1/2 the bill for the c-section, since what she did was negligent, at best......unless she didnt know the female was in heat? With your research, you will know the stages of labor and will recognize when she is starting to go into labor. You have read about a whelping box, or an area secluded and an area where she is not running all over the house, to have her puppy. |
If you go to the breeders section on here, you can browse through all the posts and find supplies you are going to need, things you will benefit from knowing, like formulas in case you need to supplement the baby's feedings, etc., and helpful advise for you. |
Dogs under 5 pounds have a much higher chance of needing c-sections and its so dangerous for them to be bred. Is there a reason she was not spayed and why would you send her to place where an unaltered male is and shes not spayed? Please after this if everything goes ok spay her. |
I am not a breeder so have no advice but I think you have already received great advice from those who are. I will be praying for your little mama and the baby. |
I will be praying that everything goes well for your little girl and hope you will offer updates. Good luck |

How old is your Yorkie? I would let your Vet schedule a C-section based on the info you have, and with an ultrasound he should be able to pin point a date. I would NOT risk a natural birth given the circumstances! |
that must be really scary for you! I think the vet might have a better idea if she can deliver naturally based on the xrays. I would keep a very close eye on her and I would be concerned myself. Please keep us posted, I hope she is ok. |
Yes, the stakes are higher for possible problems with smaller pregnant Yorkies, but many whelp with no problems. I would guess that if your vet thought it was necessary to schedule a c section after seeing the X-ray, it would have been suggested to you at that time. Have your vet on call when she goes into labor. And if possible have someone with you with some experience. As for signs of labor..........most will refuse their meal(s) the day of or before, their temp will drop in the 98 degree range or you will notice that her belly feels a lot cooler than it has been during pregnancy. As she gets closer to delivering, she will dig in blankets, her bed, or the floor, and may need to go potty more often. Noticible contractions will come next.......you will know what they are when you see them, they're pretty obvious. Stay with her at all times, stay calm, help her the best you can, and most importantly, if your gut/heart tells you something is not right, get her to your vet or emergency vet ASAP. I had a female with a singleton puppy her first litter. After seeing the X-ray my vet came in and told me, " you have one very large puppy". Scared me to death! My female weighed in the 6 pound range, so no where near as little as your girl, however her puppy weighed 6 3/4 ounces at birth and that is a big puppy for any yorkie. It took her a bit of work and a little help from me getting the head out, but she did have him naturally. A good way to estimate when she is due would be to count 63 days from the time you left her with your friend starting with the day you dropped her off and including the last day of her visit. It's been my experience with X-rays that pups were born usually a week and a half later. Good luck to you and your girl, I truly hope all goes well. Please keep us posted and let us know. |
Update My dog had her beautiful singleton puppy free whelp 10 days ago, everything went perfectly mom and baby are healthy and happy. |
