When and how often?
 

When and how often do you as breeders worm your babies. I have known that worming them to soon and to often can be harmful for little breeds. So I thought I would get opinions and advise from those who are more experienced with it. Thanks Talia

Twice is my choice!
 

For me personaly I deworm twice using Panacur... Ask your vet for what age as they always seem to have different opinions... I would make 1 deworming and then the 2nd one later on as a precaution...

Please note that there is a way to deworm which is SAFER and much cheeper product is called diatomaceous earth... It cost me only 41$ for a 25 Kilo bag! It's a white powder you give everyday for 1 month... Only 1 teaspoon mixed with food... It's much longer than any other products but it only takes 1 teaspoon per day (30 teaspoons per puppy)... And you get a HUGE bag of 25 kilos for 40$!!! This stuff is good as a flea killer (scrub powder on dog) or you can spray it anywhere in the house or outside to kill any other bugs... You can eat it yourself! (Ever worry about a insect killer geting in your doggies stomach and poisoning him or her?????? With this stuff you don't have to...

Be careful with D.E. , some people thing it is the same stuff you use in your pool filter and its not!! (well it is,but in a different way) I deworm at 6 weeks and than again at 10 weeks, but so far none of my puppies have had any worms!!

I have never had any problems with DE and I am happy with it because it does more than deworm it also kills any parasites inside the body... I have never had any problems with worms either but it's always best to make sure you don't...

Here is what it is...
It is a non-toxic, safe substance made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. Crushed to a fine powder and observed through a microscope, the particles resemble bits of broken glass. Deadly to any insect and completely harmless to animals, fish, fowl or food. I really havent seen or heard of any problems... What does it do which is bad? since you say be careful...

The only thing that I know to be careful about is not to put it everywhere outside... It kills all insects but some insects are good for us and if we kill them there is an unbalance in the earth surrounding the home... (less plant life) ect...

Thanks so much for the info. My vet had wanted to worm my little ones at 2weeks, and then at 4, and 6 weeks. I know I haven't been a vet tech for a few years but I thought that that was to much. My last litter had no worms the vet wanted to do it at 4 weeks. They wanted to do it again at 6 weeks, but i told them no I would wait until they were bigger and older. I am not to comfortable with the vet I have now, so i wanted to make sure I had a little more info than what I remember from working at a clinic. Thanks again.

No Deworming!
 

I do not deworm my puppies UNLESS there are worms. My vet does a full fecal 4 times or more on my pups by the age of 12wks. He advises not to give them dewormer if the parasites are not found. Makes perfect sense to me. So I have not dewormed my puppies. I have not had a case of worms YET (knocking on wood). I feel they are far too tiny to fill up with meds. Besides, all my Yorkies and Biewers are on Revolution which covers internal parasites as well.

I fully agree with Irene... Do a stool check several times..and go from there. Worming a 2/4 week old is so risky..
You should do a stool on mom before the pups..I realize some types of larve live in the bitches system and are dormant..but I think this is round worms. Hook worms show up in a bitches stool check and can be dangerous. You can worm the bitch before breeding. Round and tapes are not as life threathening and can be rid, if the stool shows they have them at 5 or 6 weeks.

knock on wood Belle has never had worms. I did have her checked prior to breeding, and I wanted to have her checked when i take the pups in for their first set of shots. I know when I sent one of my pups home the vet wanted to worm the pup on the health check visit, he told them it was precautinary. I advised them not to have worming done if there were no signs of worms. I was just shocked that the vet here wanted to worm them so soon. So I thought I would ask you guys what was what and make sure that things haven't changed on me. Thanks for all the great help as alway's.

You could always use the DE as it is not poisonous it is actually harmless to dogs, humans, cats, horse, cattle, ferret ect.... It will kill many kinds of parasites and also many kinds of worms... I would use it just in case stool sample testing can be innacurate.

The Revolution covers worms and other internal parasites as well as internal..It's nice to only give on 'poison'. I use the 0-5 dosage for kittens and puppies. It comes in the pink label.
