Considering Studding -advice? We have a 1 1/2 year old male Yorkie that we are thinking about studding out and are looking for some advice. What do we need to do to make sure he is ready? How do we go about finding a breeder? We think he is a great dog, but are there any reasons that we shouldn't stud him out? Thanks for any advise you can offer! |
read some... please read some of the threads on here about studding your dog, what tests should be done, how he will start "marking" also know that even after you've done all the testing and stuff that most people want a proven stud one that has produced at least 1 liter before, so you may have to buy a female or offer a free stud service to get your male proven, or at least asking f r no payment until a liter is produced, just some things to think about. |
You really should only be studding in order to better the breed. Does your boy meet all of the Yorkshire Terrior standards? You need to get all of the proper genetic and health tests done, some of which can't be completed until age 2. Do you have his lineage? Is he registered? Just having a nice looking, well mannered dog doesn't mean that he should be studded (I know it's hard, I have two great looking, well mannered males myself!) There are SOOOOO many dogs out there that are killed every day because of over breeding and over population, please don't add to that! |
There are examples of contracts you will need to have drawn up or someone is going to get taken advantage of....there are sooooooooooo many things you have absolutely NO idea about, that "professional scammers" know how to get a litter of pups and it not cost them a dime in stud fees!!! Then there are the STDs that can render your little project sterile. .....or the people that will say YOUR dog gave their precious Fluffy a STD and SHE is now sterile, and they paid $5000.00 for her and YOUR unproven stud just ruined her and THEIR retirement plan, so you owe them $5000.00+++.... I know YOU think he is "a great little dog"....what do you base that knowledge on? Is he a winning show dog, with titles and championships to back up your appraisal of him? Does he have a drop dead in your tracks pedigree with so many Champions all across, top and bottom, it looks like his papers are hemorrhaging???? Some people think having a stud and studding him out, is all the $$$$$ and none of the problems of fooling with babies, prenatal care of mom, etc. Some thorough in depth, honest, careful research will show that is just NOT the case. YOU MUST HAVE A WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF PEDIGREES AND LINES SO YOU KNOW WEHAT YOU HAVE IN A STUD AND YOU KNOW WHAT HIS PEDIGREE MIXES WITH.....IF YOU GO BREEDING YOUR LITTLE STUD, TO A FEMALE AND SOMEWHERE IN THAT BACKGROUND, IT TURNS OUT YOU HAVE THE SAME DOG TRIPPLED UP ON BOTH SIDES, WHICH IS A GENETIC TIME BOMB FOR PEOPLE THAT DO NOT KNOW WHAT THY ARE DOING,YOU COULD VERY WELL END UP WITH A LITTER THAT CONTAINS LIVER SHUNTS, BAD HEARTS, BAD HIPS/KNEES, BAD EYES, BLUE BORNS, ETC.... Anyone can throw two dogs together and have babies....the thing that determines if YOU are just another puppy mill or a caring, responsible, ETHICAL breeder, is you KNOW what that litter that is going to hit the ground, is going to be,..... with 98% certainty! God still plays a huge roll in all this, and while He expects us to do the best we can with what He gives us, dont get tooo cocky, because He will step in and show you, you are just a smmall part of the total equation. You have a very long, detailed row to hoe, learning all about pedigrees and lines and what to mix and not mix, etc.....Good luck, do it correctly and be a part of the solution and not part of the problem! |

I've heard that an intact, studded dog can become a "humping" nuisance, so to speak and ladies I've known that did use their males that way that weren't breeders with females, too, were not happy they had as their little male was a far different pet than before. I have no experience myself as my dog is my baby, besides his being neutered. But I had heard that it is kinder to male dogs to neuter them as they are always wanting to mate and tend to be frustrated and aggressive if they aren't mated occasionally, if still intact. But Yorkiemom1's concerns on the issue are so important to seriously consider first and foremost. |

I forgot all about this part....Once that male becomes "A Working Man", there is no tolerance for another male on the property, if there happens to be a female in heat on the property. My home, as well as my yard, is "fenced and crossed fenced", because there are males that definately no longer tolerate another male around "his" ladies.....now, since you dont have any other dogs around, this wont be a problem, but his whole demeanor will change....breeding males are NOT the precious little cuddly, sweet, demure little boys that just want to love on you and be loved on....they are "large and in charge", and have an attitude! |

Not to the mention the health of your "stud". And BTW in show breeders terms a "proven" stud is one that reproduces close to his good traits, and therfor can be accredited with champions to his lineage. And many studs do NOT do this! |
