caring for newborn pup
 

Hi All,

I'm extremely new to the world of newborn pups. We just had a newborn puppy yesterday, Mia. The mom was being extremely aggressive with her, trying to bite her and growling at her, not really allowing her to nurse. Our vet suggested we keep them separated and bottle feed her, to ensure nothing goes wrong and the mom does not harm the newborn.

I was hoping some experience breeders could help provide some tips/advice on caring for and raising a newborn pup. I want to be a good mom to this little angel, and make sure she's fully ready to take on the world.

have the mom's calcium being checked, females tend to do that when their calcium levels are down, in the sticky sections is a good formula recipie for feeding the baby. but check her calcium levels I am sure is something like that,because her nurturing should have kicked in..where are you in NJ, I am in jersey too..

If her blood panel comes back normal, do NOT breed this momma again.....spay her asap......there ARE some females that just are NOT good mothers, and will abandon/kill and/or eat their young. You will not only need to bottle feed this newborn every 2 hours AROUND THE CLOCK, you need to keep her warm, above 90*.....you need to remember to pee and poop her after each meal...., and you need to stimulate her phusically....I carry these newborns around inside my bra, as they need the closeness and touch to thrive. You need to be weighing her at least twice a day, to monitor her weight gain... Good luck with this new role of breeder! It is labor intensive and fraught with heartache....

You've gotten some good advice but I'd add that you might want to learn how to tube feed as well. I'm sure your vet can show you how....
I use the following formula recipe suggested by Myra Savant Harris:

List Puppy Formula.

Boil one large piece of liver in a cup of water (add water if needed) until it is very cooked. Strain the liquid and freeze leftover liquid in ice cube trays and keep in plastic bag. Don't worry about liver being a filter and having toxins. So does cat poop, but the dogs will all eat it and have since they first evolved. Hasn't killed them yet.


One 10 oz can of goats milk
3 oz of Liver water (above)
One raw egg yolk
One cup of whole fat live culture yogurt
One tablespoon of mayo or canola oil
One dropper of infant vitamins
One teaspoon of Karo...light or dark...doesn't matter which

Mix in a blender, keeps in your fridge for 7 days. This is a thick formula, so adjust holes in nipples if necessary. It can be tubed. It has 10-12 calories per cc which should allow for good weight gain on your babies.

This is my thought on this formula

It is thick enough to avoid aspiration
There is enough yogurt to avoid diarrhea issues that are so common with tubing
There is enough glucose to avoid hypoglycemia
There is also enough glucose to avoid constipation, common with tubing
There are enough calories to set up a weight gaining pattern immediately
Amino Acids in sufficient quantities to avoid juvenile cataract
It is high in Fats, Proteins and Carbs with vitamins, minerals and iron and designed especially to head off the problems we all seem to have with tubing/hand raised babies.
