Tests Needed Or Not? Please help my confusion When a buyer is screening Yorkie breeders and asks the question, "What health tests have been done on BOTH parents of the litter? Hips (OFA or PennHip) eyes (CERF), thyroid, liver, etc", and the breeder responds back with "No tests have ever been done because it wasnt needed" is this right? Is this justified that if their breeding stock has never had any health issues there is never a need to run such tests? It just seems that maybe as a precautionary that tests would be performed to make sure? But I honestly just don't know and was hoping a breeder could help w/ this question.   |
No this isn't right. Anyone who plans to breed two yorkies should atleast have liver, eyes and knees tested. atleast this is how i feel. some may not do this because the dogs may be their first breeding pair or whatever, and even though those dogs appear to be healthy at a young age, how do they know what could develop down the line that was un-seen from parents. these basic tests are not outrageously expensive to have done at all, so they should be done. |

Thank you Snow Yorkies also for your reply. It is extreamly frustrating because I have yet to find a breeder whom I have screened which offers this information. They seem to want to avoid and dance around this question. I am guessing that then if these tests have been done on the litters parents this documentation would be attached in the pups paperwork for documentation/proof for the buyer to obtain. |
Pre-breeding, Trixie and Cody had liver tests, knees examined, jaws (not sure why, had never heard of this?), eyes, ear canals, and immune system test...am I forgetting anything...? (Hard to remember w/out my little chart in front of me!) |

You are very welcome. :) :) |
Good point. I have not given out the info on Trixie and Cody simply becuase I thought it was irrelevant. The tests done on them were for our knowledge. I've told the soon-to-be new owners that they have no history of disease/health problems...because they don't and advise them that my vet would be happy to talk with them to verify such and answer any questions they have. :) |

Ok, I did not realize that such information is not normally passed onto the buyer. I was not aware of this. I appreciate everyone's input on this. :aimeeyork |

I guess it is a matter of preference for the breeder. I wouldn't be opposed to going into details with the buyers, but so far I have not been asked to. As I said, the tests were for our knowledge--to make a decision on breeding. I just don't see the need in going into details on each test for each dog when a simple, "there is no history of such in the parents" is all they need and all they are looking for. |
