advice on nursing and moms milk drying up hi everyone our 6 pups are now 2 weeks old, the past few days mum has not been wanting to feed as much i took her to the vets they said they thought her milk was drying up and there was not that much you could do about it, the pups are healthy gaining weight they dont cry or squeal and have long naps inbetween i have been bottle feeding them a supplement milk just to be safe, when i squeeze mums nipples a little milk does come out but not lots she does still nurse them but not as much as she was, she is on high calorie puppy food and lots of water does anyone know of any other suplements or advice that could help mum produce more milk ?? thanks is advance jenna |
I am wondering how old momma is? I dont know of anything to make her start producing more milk...I would imagine as long as the bibies are continuing to nurse, she will continue to produce some milk....but you definately need to be supplimenting 2 week ould babies. I have a formula for orphaned/abandoned/failure to thrive babies...it keeps them gaining the weight they need to be gaining.... 8 oz Just Born with Colostrum Puppy formula 4 oz Pedialyte 1 cup Yogurt with Live Cultures 1 raw egg yolk 3 tbsp Dr.Millers Pet Nurta Drops Feed 1cc/0z body weight. At two weeks, you can probably go to every 4 hours, around the clock, then at 5 weeks, every 6 hours, with the addition of puppy gruel (puppy kibble maashed and mixed with some of this formula for a liquid but thick consistancy....I start with Royal Canin canned puppy mousse, they love this...put a little of the formula with it to make it a thick liquid.....I gradually add the puppy kibble to this, cut back on the canned mousse, and by the time they are 8 weeks old, it is just kibble softened with the formula...then keep going to dryer puppy kibble....by 10-11 weeks, they are on dry puppy kibble. |
I don't know if it is safe for dogs so you'd have to cross check. But there's several versiins of a thissle tea for breastfeeding humans that increase milk production. A plethera of natural herbs as well. I can vouch for the mother's milk tea really working for myself. |
mum is nearly 3 years old, thank you for the recipie i am currently feeding the puppies a milk supplement so i take it your recipie is the same with a milk supplement but with added ingredients ? i shall give it a try !! mom and babies are going for check up at vets tomorrow thank you xx |

I have heard in my breeding groups about Fenugreek, for their bitches, but i have never used it, maybe if you google it you can find more information on it. I google it from another poster, but I can't find the link right now.. best of luck at the vet tomorrow.. hugs |

Fenugreek will increase milk production, at least it supposed to. |
I attended that 2 hour breeders webinar this evening....they listed some things that will increase milk prodeuction....Oxitocin, feed her oatmeal, Reglan increases milk supply and BRATWURST!!! Vet said she had NO idea how or why, but she has used it with her own bitches, and she just fried it up in a pan, and fed her 1/2 - 1 link, slowly a little at a time.....wild!! |
My Mentor replied to me this morning she said she highly recomends this Happy Jack product, I have not used it personally but she said that she had recomended to many breeders and it works like a charm. and is made specifically for Dogs.. Happy Jack® Milkade | Revival Animal Health |

I just looked at the box and go figure fenugreek is in the tea, along with a whole host of other supplements, I reread the notes from my lactician, she recommended the tea and a separate supplement of fenugreek! Mothers Milk Tea - Mother's Milk Tea - Traditional Medicinal |
Did you get the bitch's calcium level checked? Revival has their own brand of milk replacer that is really excellent. Mom should be on puppy food and you can take some canned and mix in the milk replacer as well. If her blood calcium level is low she will need calcium injections under the skin daily. Oral calcium takes two weeks to build an adequate blood level. If her calcium is low she cannot produce milk and is subject to eclampia. This is really an urgent problem ruth |
