Sassee wont eat after delivery
 

Sassee had 7 puppies one of which was a stillborn and we lost a female because i think she cut the umbilical cord too short. The rest of the puppies were healthy until lastnight i notice the smallest male was very weak and kind of fading so i gave him some nutrical which completely turned him around he went from barely moving to moving around alot better and whining whish is a good sign i have been up all night around the clock bottle feeding because he wont nurse yet but im pretty sure from past experience if i wouldnt have noticed it when i did we definitely would have lost him he is only 2oz. i have tried to put him alone with the mother but he just wont nurse maybe he could be still a little too weak i think i pretty much have him alot closer to being healthy. My real concern at the moment is the mother she delivered friday and really hasnt eaten anything since...She had a little dry food friday and saturday...sunday i tried some can food as well as boiled chicken breast she ate a little of each and thats all..she really hasnt even drank water like im used to a whelping mother drinking. I will now tried some liver, maybe cottage cheese and yogurt nothing seems to entice her too eat so im really worried any other suggestions? Thx

did you call your vet? i know nothing of breeding and babies but i would think something is wrong if she is not eating or drinking. i hope shes ok.

She has eaten and drank water just not as much as i would like or used to from nursing mothers.

LIVER, go to the grocery store and buy calf liver, cook it in about 4 onz of water , let it cool and pass it thru the blender making sort of a paste, add that to ther kibble.. I had a very finicky girl that whelped 4 puppies and I had the same problem, another breeder told me to do that, and it worked , also do the same with chicken breast, the secret is to mix it well with the kibble, I also add a bit of cottage cheese to ther dinner and she ate everything after, I did it for Delilah since wenesday, she's been eating fine..

2 oz is pretty small and in my experience almost always requires some intervention. Tube feeding or at least bottle feeding every few hours for the first several days or so.... as for you girl not eating, I have to hand feed mine but they are usually ravenous...is her temperature normal? I think I would be worried about infection....

Yes i have been bottle feeding the small pup he has had a major improvement i can tell he is getting alot stronger and is also starting to gain weight i was using milk replacer 1st but i change to the goat milk formula after talking to a friend and since the change he is doing even better still wont nurse yet tho. I took Sassee and the pups to the vet earlier and the vet said she look fine he gave her some liquid vitamins but he said if she doesnt start to eat we might have to put her on an IV tommorow.

How's your mom doing? Mine will not eat kibble after whelping either. She gets various meals of chicken, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, hard cheese along with merricks wingaling which contains whole chicken wings including the bone for calcium. She also loves the whelping pudding.

She's fine now i took her to the vet she ended up having an infection and fever which she was treated for after the 1st couple days got some shots and still didnt really get any better so i took her back they ended up putting her on IV for about an hr. and this time they gave her some B12, penicillin, something else i forgot and then some clavomox. She did a complete 360 after the 2nd trip to the vet but i was kinda mad i ended up having to take her back to the vet i felt like they could have diagnosed her better the 1st time but she back eating and feeling good so thats all that matters.

Oh, whew, so glad to read your last post that she was diagnosed and is doing better now. I was going to suggest that she may have an infection or a retained placenta. Usually girls are starving after whelping, with all the nursing and body recovery. Please keep us posted on how your little ones are doing:love:
