A possible 2nd litter...
 

Hey all,
I doubt anyone will really remember me, but 20montbs ago my little kuki had a litter of 3 perfect little pups. I am considering a second litter, but have a few questions I was hoping some of you could help with.
Kuki is 5 1/2lbs, her mother is 6 1/2 and father 6- with larger (9+lb) dogs far back in his pedigree. The stud I used was 4 1/2 ish and his lines are pretty consistent in size (and type). Of the 3 pups I kept the only girl with the hope of showing her, however she grew to 9lbs, although IMO fits the standard in Every other way. Of the boys, one is 4-5lbs and the other is 8. They have fairly large ears, but they did stand. The only other 'fault' I can see is the little boy has a slightly paler nose than others.
I do want a show pup from my kuki, who is 4yrs old and currently lp and pra clear. There is no YT breeder in NI who DNA tests so personally I don't think it would be of benefit (if kuki was to have a carrier status I wouldn't know what the stud carried...
I know this isn't a Lot of info to go on, but think this Op is long enough as it is! So my question really, I adore the typyness of the pups and kuki and the stud do seem pretty darn compatible, it's only the size throwback that's the problem. Should I stick with the same line of even same stud, or find a different stud from different lines and hope for type?

I think I am confused, what are you DNA testing for? You do know PRA is not a DNA test? Carrier status of what? The only true DNA test I know of that is applicable to Yorkies is Hyperuricosuria. It is up to you if you want to test for this. At least if you do, you would know if you had a "normal" girl that did NOT carry the gene you could mate her to an "unknown". How-ever if there is a health history of bladder and or kidney stones in that proposed sire, I would pass, and most especially if my gal was a carrier.

Now are you considering using the same sire that was used for Kuki's first litter? If so that combo is throwing large eared and large sized pups. Why would you, if you are indeed considering using the same stud?

Have you championed Kuki? If so, is there a breeder's group in Ireland you can discuss with? Type is really important as you know, but again I may be misreading what you have written, but you noted a girl that grew to 9lbs and a boy to 8lbs that is obviously not to standard. And that seems like 2/3 of the first litter were off standard.

I have not looked at the FCI standard recently, I think that Ireland falls under FCI?

hi, no you're not confused- im jus terrible at explaining myself! I'd meant the blood test for pra, rather than the yearly test. There is no history of bladder or kidney issues on either side. Their ears werent huge, just a little bigger than if hoped, and the little boy got his mommas ears.
Kuki isn't championed- she was very unimpressed with a long coat, so I ha to have her cut- heaven forbid I get in the way of her rolling in fox poo :rolleyes:
and It seems to take a lot longer to get dogs championed here because we have so few shows in comparison with bigger countries :(

I have spoken with both our NI club an a lady from down south (who I'm going to get the number of a YT judge off who can hopefully help further) but I think I'd rather the pups be a little over standard size than lose the features and of course temperment and health. I just don't know!
And to top everything off I missed the champ show in Belfast today because of a lack of transport :( :(
I've only met one other exhibitor who has the type I'm wanting with good health and they are literally the opposite end of the island; what with kuki being quite irregular with her seasons I'm not sure I could get her there. I REALLY need to learn to drive!

If you do truly want a show dog, then yes I actually think you need to learn to drive. Even here, there is no way I could go to shows (of which there are many) without being able to drive there. Buses just simply don't go to where the shows are, and lugging what you need to, to go to shows simply isn't practical on a bus.

Also if you want a show dog, well then, it does take time on your part, and effort. They need to be trained to the wraps from a young age. You start by banding up the hair at about 7mths or so. Then add a couple of wraps a week until they get used to them.

I did have a show boy I maintained in wraps, and we did swimming all summer, also agility and obedience work, when he was in full wraps. There are some videos of him doing same in full wraps. So it is possible to let your dog have an active life with them in wraps. How-ever I don't think I'd be allowing my dog to roam free through bush and roll in fox scat.
