Have u heard of these illinois breeders? Chery's yorkies in manteno, il or precious little paws in milan, il any information would be appreciated! |
I have no first hand experience with either of these breeders, but this might help. Here is a list of red flags to look for when you are considering a breeder. Check and see how many (if any) of them apply to any breeder you are considering. * Dogs not being bred to meet the breed standard. (Which means you have to have a good understanding of what the standard is first.) * Dog that are unregistered * Breeding multiple breeds instead of just one * Breeding mutts/designer dogs/mixes/crosses * Breeders who have multiple litters in a very short amount of time * Advertising dogs as "teacups" or "minatures" (micros, teddy bears, etc) * Breeders using females that are too small (under 5 lbs for breeding) * Extremely cheap dogs--breeding comes with costs, extreme low prices suggests they are cutting corners somewhere * Pet store dogs (these are supplied by puppy mills) * Breeders that do not perform health testing on pups and parents (specific health tests, not just "vet checked") * Releasing pups at a very young age---6 wks, or 8 wks. For Yorkies, releasing them around 12 weeks is preferred * Breeders who don't place dogs on spay/neuter agreements * Not having a sales agreement with health guarantee |
Did a quick web search, found the Precious Little Paws website: Precious Little Paws in Illinois :: Welcome Again, I have no experience with these breeders, but here are a few things that stood out to me that are typically considered to be "red flags" in regards to breeding: * They are breeding multiple breeds and mixed breed dogs. Opinions vary, but for me, that alone would be a deal breaker. Purposely crossing breeds to create and sell mutts is NOT a responsible breeding practice. * Breeding non-standard dogs * I personally don't agree with any breeder who takes deposits or orders over the internet for dogs and ships them out like cargo, no questions asked. IMO, good breeders CARE about the homes their dogs are going to. They are selective with new owners and meet them first. * They send pups to their new homes at 8 weeks--WAY to young to be separated from mom and litter mates. * The health guarantee only covers health defects that are life threatening. There are loads of genetic health issues that can occur that aren't life threatening, but avoidable and costly to the owner. * And it doesn't look like they care one way or the other if the dog is ever spayed/neutered. :thumbdown Personal opinion, keep looking. |
Thank you so much for the information and VERY good points that I will take into consideration during my seach. Do you know of any good breeders in my area that you can recommend? I live about 30 miles outside of Chicago. Thanks again! |
I was searching for good breeders in Illinois, too. I live close to you. I thought I had found one in Central Illinois but after asking some questions a red flag went up that they were a commercial breeder. Their dogs are bred in a "facility" not in their home. There is a breeder in Frankfort, IL that is recommended, but she has a waiting list right now. I contacted Brenda from Greens Treasured Yorkies after reading a lot of glowing reviews on this site. Just put the deposit down and I'm anxiously awaiting the day the puppies are old enough to come home. |

Yes, that is the breeder I was talking about. I had contacted several breeders and got a little confused on who said what. I went back and read her e-mail again and she said she had several inquiries, not a waiting list. Best of luck to you on finding a new Yorkie to love. They are such wonderful loving little dogs. |
thanks barkleylove - post some pics of the pup when you get them home : ) |
