A simple question for the professionals. Hello fellow yt lovers, I have a simple question for ya. Whats the difference between puppy movement and contractions (I'm presuming mild contractions). I just cant tell because her temperature is not really bottoming out at 98 yet. She is fluctuating between 100.3-99.8. I would appreciate more of the seasoned breeders please. No offense, its just that I've already read through a whole lot of forums and know that all dams aren't textbook and some go into labor at 99 degrees. So I kinda wanna read alot about puppy movement and contractions. |
Im not a "seasoned" breeder or a breeder at all for that matter, but have been around a few whelps (both yorkie and other breeds). What day is she? When did her last tie occur? I do know that the temp is frequently not a good factor. More the behavior of the female.... |
i was thinking she is on day 63 from first tie but from the last tie, maybe day 59. But what do you know how to distinguish puppy movement or contractions? |
watch the tail. it goes up as they contract;) |
When puppies move in the womb it will be just a small kick or you might feel a lump when the head or body moves. When a female starts having contraction her whole belly will get rock hard during a contraction then it will relax. Early contractions are sometimes hard to spot but usually the female will be laying still then she might just shift her position during the contraction. As the contractions get harder and closer most females will want to get up and go pee and poop more often because of the pressure from the puppies. Some females will strain/push standing up and others will just lay down to push. Most females will start heavy panting once the labor has started. Most females start digging a lot too once they are in labor. The really hard contractions usually last 30 minutes to an hour before the puppy is pass. It really depends on the size of the female and the size of the pups. Some females will cry out when they pass a puppy and some will push the puppy out very quietly. Good luck with your whelping. I pray all goes well. |
ok.. thank you soo much for the insight. She is doing alot of shifting from laying on side to the other. And the panting and a lil digging was happening when i wrote the post. Now and it now like past 24 hours ago she is just as relaxed and breathing as calm as ever. I guess I will wait the rest of the weekend. Again it was very helpful. |
