Breeding question Hi I was looking to find out from experienced breeders the following. If I have a male yorkie that weighs 13lbs would he have to be bred to a larger female? I thought the male was always supposed to be smaller than the female but I have heard otherwise also. I'm not saying I will breed him but I have had a few people inquire about using him for stud. He is beautiful & has a wonderful personality but of course he is to large to show. Any helpful information would be appreciated. He is 15 months old. Thanks!! |
Hi! I am not a breeder but the male should always be smaller than the female...this is what I have read/heard |
Please read everything you can here in the Breeder forum. There is alot more to breeding your dog than his size and temperament and beauty. He is way above standard (though I'm sure he's as cute as can be!!) and breeding only those dogs that are as close to the standard as possible is going to preserve the breed that we love so much. Here is the standard: American Kennel Club - Yorkshire Terrier Also, breeding males tend to have some quirks that some find hard to live with. I am not a breeder, just very interested in it and do a lot of reading, here and other places. Welcome to YT:) |
Although I love the bigger yorkies as I have one, only yorkies that are standard should be bred so please neuter your male and let him be just a pet. |
This is where you must have a working nowledge of YOUR lines and the female's lines, and the particular pedigrees behind both dogs. If you have an absolutely exquisite, top notch male, with a pedigree that is HEAVY with outstanding lines, and the same with the female,, and you know what these dogs throw, you may be able to breed these two and have absolutely gorgeous, babies, well within the standard.....you CAN NOT just take two dogs, get the male smaller than the female, breed them, and come out with babies that conform to the breed standard......it is what is BEHIND these two dogs, for many generations, that will determine what the babies look like! THAT is what "BREEDING" is all about....pedigrees and knowing them thoroughly...what mixes and what doesnt...and you can STILL get flukes!!! |
Breeding question Hi, thanks everyone for your feedback it is appreciated. Max is scheduled to be neutered Aug 20th. I have just had a few people mention that I should think about breeding him. Yorkie mom, thank you for your professional advice. I would only breed him if I can find a professional willing to help and guide me with this decision. I am not and will not be a backyard breeder. Thats why I am looking for advice. I have had female yorkies all my life that have lived full lives 13, 15 and 17 years old and take breeding very seriously. Thank you again!! |
Wishing Max and you all the best for his neuter:love: It's amazing how many people ask me on the street if I want to breed my girls. Yes, they're cute, but they're far from the standard. I also wouldn't put them through that, they mean too much to me:) They are spayed, and it's so sad yet funny to see the look of disappointment on the person's face when I tell them that:laugh: I hope my girls live as long as yours have, you must be a wonderful Yorkie-Mommy:D!!! |
Breeding question Hi LunasMomma Your a sweetheart. I love my yorkies so much they are my kids. Max will be getting neutered on the 20th. because it is the best thing for his health in the long run. My girls were all spayed at young ages too. I look forward to spoiling Max for many years to come!! Enjoy your girls and thanks for your kindness:):animal-pa |
Breeding question Hi again, I have an offer from a friend with a 5 1/5# yorkie female (which she kept out of a litter her other female produced)and another offer from a guy I work with he has a 11# yorkie. That is why I was asking about it. I do realize that a lot of research goes into breeding and it's not to be taken lightly. |

I don't want to offend anyone because I was asking for help and got answers although evasive. I guess times have really changed among breeders and their helpfulness. I did have a very special breeder/judge that gave me excellent sound advice in regards to my female yorkie in 1995 and would happily answer any questions and or concerns I had and guide me. Unfortuntely that sweet knowlegable AKC judge has passed and with that a generation of expertise. |

IMO, The Yorkshire Terrier Breed has been under incredible pressure, due to the number of byber's, commercial breeders, and others, who want to "cash in" on a popular breed. Health issues that were pretty rare 15 or more years ago, are becoming more common these days. Just take a browse through the sick and emergency threads, and Yorkie Health and Diet to see the nature and number of the types of problems Yorkies have. Look at the frequency of posts in the General Forum; asking in one form or another; Is my Yorkie really a Yorkie? Just the other weekend I was talking to a Yorkie breeder, and we were lamenting the fact that this young male age:12 months, would now be placed in a pet home; why? too large at 8 lbs. He had everything else going for him. I do hope you can find a mentor like the one you had earlier. |

"Big and Red"!!!!! I got a HUGE laugh out of that!!! Thanks DvlshAngel!!! After the day I have had at work, that was much need!!! But your message is true! KNOWLEDGABLE, EXPERIENCED MENTORS ARE ABSOLUTELY WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD! And you run into them, hanging out at the larger dog shows, where "the big boys go"!!! |
