What to do about a breeder Hey everyone, I'm new to having a yorkie. I bought an 8 week old puppy for my wife this past Sunday. Sunday night we found worms on her and had to go to the animal urgent care center. It turned out she had a bad case of tapeworms, which was the reason she stopped eating. Then Monday we took her to the vet for a wellness exam and they said she had a "flea infestation" and a skin infection because of it. They also had to redo her initial shots as they don't recognize people who give the shots themselves at home. I called the vet she listed as the place who cropped the tails, did the dewclaws, and gave them a clean bill of health. They said yes to the tails and dewclaws, but that they never did a health inspection, AND the wormer the breeder bought does not kill tapeworms. There were a bunch of 2-week old puppies and two more 8-week puppies, plus three older parents still at the house. They were nice people, but I'm afraid the other puppies all have tapeworms and fleas as well. We tried contacting her with a text that explained everything and kindly recommended she get the other dogs checked. She never replied, but made a Facebook status saying her dogs are all 100% clean and the vet guaranteed it. Should we do anything? |
First thing is a reputable breeder won't let you have the pup in 8 weeks. They will also refund your $$ if you get them checked right away or share the cost of the vet. So if the Yorkie is healthy?? Just remember or research better on the next one. It will save you headaches from buying an unhealthy pup. Yorkies can be one of the most puppy mill dogs because they are cute. They have alot of costly health problems. There really isn't much you can do??? |
Tapeworms are the result from ingesting fleas and regular wormers do not kill tapeworms. Usually a shot will clear up the tapeworms and regular flea preventative will eliminate the fleas. Many breeders vaccinate at home. Other than notifying the breeder there isn't much you can do. |
Doesn't sound like she is a good breeder at all. :(. How sad for the other pups there. I don't know if there is an animal control in your area. Maybe contact them to see if there is anything that can be done. Unfortunately, most of the time they don't do anything at all. :( |
When I got Zachary, my Biewer Yorkie, he was the first puppy I have ever gotten that did NOT have worms or ear mites or both!! Thank God your baby only had fleas and worms. It could have been MUCH worse. If you get another puppy, check him over for fleas and ear mites. They should be easy to see. Good luck, Louise :animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
