hi a little nudge in the right direction please hello...first of all i should say i have posted before and the replies i got were to get her spayed.... i decided to breed my yorkie on her 3rd season health checks were done and scans done (and mentor found) she is 4.5 weeks and all is going to plan so far. i have 2 questions i can't find the answer to. 1. the weather just got good ans she likes to sunbathe to the point where she starts to pant.... will this affect the puppies? darn this uk weather. 2. the scan showed at least 5 pups (possible 6)which is a surprise as i was told the first litter is usually 1 or 2 pups and the most a yorkie has is 4 and as this is a larger than expected litter are there any problems other than hoping the milk supply will not run out? |
Hello and welcome, to answer your questions, I am a silky terrier breeder, My girls LOVE to sunbathe and is very good for them, lots of vitamin D. I let them do it they are smart and they don't burn like us humans do.LOL I always provide a good shady spot in the deck too in case I am in the pool or in the garden. the number of puppies is not a major issue as long as she has the room to carry them to term, I know a silky breeder which girl had 8 pups, my top number is 6. just keep up the good work, make sure she does not over eat but what she eats is nutricious, keep her off calcium until the puppies are born, calcium during pregancy can cause uterine inertia.. hugs and best of luck.. |
Well with six possible pups coming, I'd definitely have my vet on speed dial. Hopefully she is young and healthy, with a broad pelvis. Did your reproduction vet say anything about the size of the pups and her pelvic width? Just make sure you time everything when the contractions and birthing starts. Sometimes with the last one or two pups, there can be a much longer time between births. Don't let her go over 1hr - get to the vet. Many sites will say 1.5 or even 2hrs; but I like the 1hr; by the time you load up the car and travel to the vet another 30minutes are gone. Good luck with your whelp, and definitely with 6pups she will need calcium supplements. |
she's a good size...i've been trying to compare bellies over the net....so far her belly matches bellies of yorkies that had 2 pups at full term..... i cant upload a picture onto the site but "puppies | Facebook" shows a week 1 picture and a week 4 ish (32 days) picture |

i'll have to get the vet to check....he didt think she would have too many probs. |
A very rough rule of thumb, not to be confused with actual measurements. For most normal sized female hands, a comfy two finger widths measurement. 2.5 or 3 would be great. |
i did the rough measure ment and i felt for the pelvic bone and there is space for 3 fingers with slight gaps :) i'm thinking her first scan mat have missed a couple of pups... she is getting big i'm going to work out how to get a pic that can be up loaded...she looks like she is going to explode and there are 4 weeks to go |
1 Attachment(s) here is the belly shot.... as this is the first expectant yorkie i have met i'm hoping this is normal.... you won't believe how hard it was to upload this..... |
She looks so tiny. Well all but that tummy lol. How big is she? |
