Breeders. Do any of you use oxycotin (sp) to strengthen contractions. I was told to use it also to be sure everything was cleaned out after whelping. Experiences & opinions please. Thanks, |
Oxytocin from what I understand is used if the water has broken and the contractions have not started. IMO, I would not give it to her at the beginning of labor. Yes, I've heard that you give it to them to contract out any afterbirths or pieces that may be left. I've heard of breeders keeping a stock on hand...but you'd have to check with the more seasoned breeders. |
shots Giving Oxytocin is not something to be done lightly. If done improperly, the uterus can rupture. Correct dosage is important. In the beginning I asked my vet to draw up several injections before whelping. As posted, do not give at the start of labor, before the uterus is fully dilated. It is important IMO to give it after whelping to clean the bitch out of placentas, etc. If you do not know what you are doing it is best to let the vet do it. |
Thanks to both of you. |
NEVER, NEVER GIVE OXYTOCIN UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN VERY THOUROUGH INSTRUCTIONS BY YOUR VET!! Improper use of Oxy can and has killed the mom. If she has not dilated and it is given, the uterus can rupture..literally explode. The dosage is very specific and as Pat said, NOT TO BE USED LIGHTLY!!!!! And, all could have been prevented if only the person knew their own limitations.. There are way too many dangers for a non-professional to use these very powerful drugs.. |

Thanks WispersMom2 & Snow Yorkies. I did get the oxy from my vet & dose instriction of 1/2 cc every 30 min. I would still call my vet for consultation before using as they are always available to talk to. I value all advice, thanks again. |
Linda, how many units of Oxytocin is there in each ML of your solution? I am only familiar with the dosage of 20U/ml and wondered if there is another strength..Thanx |
