Can't hear heart beats! I have just bought a stethoscope and am trying to hear little heartbeats in Maddie's belly. Nothing...not even a hint of a heartbeat. It works, because I can hear Maddie's heartbeat when I put it to her chest, but no puppy heartbeats. Maddie is at 40 days now. I thought I should be able to hear something. I'm really worried. I'm also a novice, so maybe i'm doing something wrong or there is a certain type of stethoscope I should purchase?? I tried to feel her stomach for any signs of pups, but I don't want to press on her too much when I don't know what I'm doing. I thought I felt one little lump on her side, but unless you're experienced, you really can't tell. I am worried this may be a false pregnancy. :( Would her belly start to get larger when having a false pregnancy? Sorry for all the questions!! |
I still think it's a little early to hear the heartbeats. I got a REALLY nice stethoscope on eBay and a cheap one, too. I found that the more expensive one worked A LOT better than the cheaper one. But weight another week and try it. |
Actually, we never could hear any heartbeats with Trixie's litter. We could hear what we are pretty sure was 'moving,' but it didn't sound much different from a growling stomach. I think maybe it is because she carried quite a bit of fluid? Not sure why it didn't happen for us...I am with txshopper though, it IS too early to tell. |
disclaimer: this post is just based on my experience and training- I have only had one litter. I could hear heartbeats close to this time, but I have had training in it (nursing) the fast beats are the boys, slower are the girls (but the baby girls should be faster than the moms) When I first started listening to heartbeats they were just faint little taps- but eventually they grew stronger (as the babies grew) I only had a 29 dollar stethoscope that we purchased at school... it also had a ped side, but I used the adult side. It is hard to tell this early what you are hearing unless you have experience in it... I wouldn't worry at this point. If you are concerned you can get an ultrasound or an xray- but I am not 100% sure on how far along she has to be for that. good luck, it is the waiting that is so hard sometimes. |
I also only had one litter, and I also purchased a cheap stethscope and could never hear any heartbeats.. |

Thanks everyone. I feel a little better now that I know I'm not the only one that didn't hear the heartbeats. I know...I am just so anxious! I'm also really paranoid  My stethoscope also has a ped side. I tried both sides with no luck. I plan on getting an x-ray done on her at around 51 days. I think it's too early for it now. I guess I just have to be patient!! |
I am also a nurse and when Abbey was pregnant I used my Peds/infant steth! The adult one will also pick up Mother dogs gut noises ( gastric motility)! :) |
I have found that unless a person has a lot of experience with the proper use of a stethoscope when trying to hear tiny babies heartbeats. The info you would glean from trying to hear the beats is of little value except for making us even more excited about the coming events. I have a Doppler and it is almost foolproof. Ask Pat from Primrose about that.. One of my moms, Skylar, is delivering babies right now. I usually, actually almost always, have my moms X-rayed to get the info about numbers, size, fit thru the pelvis and so on. I didn't get to do it this time and thank goodness, i have that Doppler. I heard definitely 3 heartbeats a couple of weeks ago. Today, she has whelped 2 puppies and quit. So, I got out the Doppler and listened and sure enough there is still another puppy waiting to be born.. So we are on puppy watch til she delivers. Early trip to the vet in the morning.. |
any heartbeats yet??? |
Nope, not yet. Well...maybe, I just can't fine 'em  |

Maddie is going to the vet for her xrays today. YAY! My waiting is over. I finally get to know how many babies we'll be expecting! Keep you posted :D |
Bittersweet day today. I took maddie for xrays and nothing. NOTHING! She may have a false pregnancy. I am going to post a new thread  |
That happened to me the first time I mated Bell, I was so depressed :( , and it seemed like the 7 months between her cycle would last forever, but it did go quickly and she had 3 beautiful puppies. SO sorry for your disapointment. |
