At what age do you let Puppies go to new owner? Hi! I have 4 beautiful 9 week old puppies. Two are big and two are smaller (about 2lbs) At what age should I let them go to their new owners? I am thinking of keeping the two smaller ones longer... they are getting their first vaccines tomorrow. |
Welcome to YT. I would wait until 12 weeks and with the smaller ones longer. I got Georgie at 10 weeks and he was 1lb:eek: I would never recommend that for anyone. |
b Twelve weeks is good and a little longer for the smaller ones. New owners often arent ready to deal with hypoglycemia issues that can occur with young pups and also its good for socialization. I think its very good you are asking this question. Some breeders just see that other breeders are letting them go early and follow suit. Reputable breeders that care about their pups and new owners keep them untill 12 weeks though |
Pups I am letting go to pet homes don't go until about 3 months. First set of vacc's are done at 10 week, second set at 14weeks then they can go to their new home. One particularly small and not yet 2 1/2 lbs at 3 months, I don't let them go and it is a wait and see from there. |
Thank you! I have told the new owners that I will be keeping them until they are 12 weeks and the little ones, I am keeping until they are 4 months old... I bought my Lacey at 4 months and she has turned out to be the best well mannered Yorkie ever! They are just so active now and I was getting a little worn out but will do what is best for my babies! thanks for the replies... |
12 weeks is best. I did let pups (1 from each of Cozy's 2 itters) go early to a family friend. I knew I would see the puppy almost daily and he would call over any little thing. Now 4 years later I still get Toby and Chelsea phone calls weekly. Plus he has had Yorkies for close to 30 years. His oldest dog right now is an 18 year old yorkie. Someone is home 24/7. Both he and his brother are retired. This Yorkies (6) are his life. They go to the groomer once a week to be beautified plus he home cooks per vet nutritionist plans for each dog daily. They only go to a holistic vet. Can you say overly spoiled? I would leave mine with him in a heartbeat if my parents could not watch them due to an emergency. |
12 weeks to go home and if it is a smaller puppy very prudent to wait a couple weeks longer or even more. Law says 8 weeks, but an 8 week old lab can not be compared to an 8 week old yorkie. XOXO |
Definitely no earlier than 12 weeks. Sometimes not even before 16 weeks depends on size and ability to be separate from mom and siblings. |
