What do you all think? First of all HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!! I need some feed back on whether the breeders here supplement there females before, during and after pregnancy. What tyoe of Vitamins if so and do you keep them on puppy food year round. My Mimi had a litter back in August, 4 boys everything went extremly well and pups absolutely healthy. I had her on puppy food and pet tabs and of course when she delivered I started her on calcium and cottage chesse. My next female Amanda is in heat now I want to know if I should make any changes on weather to supplement or not. My Vet has always said that if it is a premium food there is no need to supplement. What do you all think. Thanks is advance, Liza |
Hi Liza, Happy Holidays to you too!! This is what I do with my females. All year round I give ShowBrite by MetroPlex. It's a supplement that has everything in it. Once bred, I feed my females Chicken breast and Ceasars Tins to beef them up a little I also give some cottage cheese but not alot. Once pups are born I give add some Carnation Evaporated Milk to the Ceasars, all the while, I'm giving the ShowBrite as well. As for puppy food, I buy a bag of puppy and a bag of dog food and mix together. I don't give just one or the other. Good luck. Irene |
Thanks Irene,I'll look into that supplement. So I assume you do not give extra calcium other than the little bit of cottage cheese Huh? I give them Solid gold puppy, but I was considering changing the food to SOlid Gold " Just A Wee bit" but what I'm really concerned in is weather to supplement with any other vitamins as well. I'll be checking into the one you use. Thanks, Liza |
My vet advised me not to over supplement the calcium it can have adverse effects. That's why I don't give calcium tabs in addition. I have a link to ShowBrite..you can buy it here. http://showbrite.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=1 Your vet may sell it, mine does. Irene |
We started Trixie on puppy food (Purina ProPlan Chicken and Rice) about 4 weeks after breeding her...trust me, it was OBVIOUS at this point she'd taken. Then, after she whelped, we kept her on the puppy food and started her with cottage cheese too. Per vet & breeder recommendations. She didn't have any other vitamins except antibiotics 1 week priro and 2 weeks after whelping to prevent uterine infection. Hope this helps... |
My vet says the same thing, you don't want to over supplement with cal, they produce it naturaly all you have to do is really give it a little boost with cottage cheese and maybe 1/2 A TUM. Thanks for the link. |
