have question on birth weight 2 Attachment(s) Mia had her pups yesterday on her due date (and my 40th bday). She did wonderful! She had three puppies. She is an excellent mother. Since this is my first set of puppies with such a small breed I am in need of some info. please...... her pups weighed at birth (I call them Small , Medium and Large) LOL 4.6 oz - girl 3.7 oz - boy 2.1 oz - girl They all look good, but the little one is soooo tiny. She is moving and cries now and then and I do get her to suck on Mom but she doesn't go at it aggressively or very long. How do I know if she is getting enough or should I just supplement anyway. I just don't want to do something I shouldn't. She gained .4 oz since yesterday but is that enough?? The other two gained about an oz. How do I know if she is just a small pup and will be fine or if she is in trouble and needs me to feed her more??? Or is it just something you "know" by looking at her? My gut is saying just keep an eye on her , make sure she eats from mom and gains weight.... BUT.... I don't want to go passed the helping point... am I making sense ? Mom is 7.5 lbs Dad is 4.2 lbs Thanks for your help |
congrats! wow that is large, med and small for sure. im sorry i have no breeding experience but hopfully someone who does will answer for you. did you check with your vet or mentor?? just to ease your mind. your mia is beautiful and so are her pups glad the whelping went good! and happy late birthday. |
I contacted the breeder I used for the stud. She is awesome and very helpful. She said I may want to supplement. I go to the Vet for a puppy/mom check later today and will be asking him as well. I just want to ask as many people as possible because you never know that one person who has the perfect advice because they have been though the same thing. Thank You :) |
Small puppy Just continue to observe to make sure she is nursing. As long as she is gaining weight steadily, don't worry too much unless you see other signs from her. As long as she isnt lethargic, skin looks dehydrated, or crying constantly and is gaining a little weight she should be fine. It is kind of funny because 2 1/2 oz. is about average for my puppies. Just depends on what you are used to. Congrats on the new babies. |
Congratulations on a beautiful litter! Look how precious momma is protecting her babies, all curled up around them! My babies usually run 2.5 - 4 oz.....I just watch the smaller ones very closely.....but if I get the least bit concerned about skin turgor, dehydration, activity level, overall appearance, I tube feed that little one.....just supplement what it is able to get from mom....you want it to get stronger and develop a good sucking reflex and not tire out while nursing, so I will only tube feed twice a day...once early morning, once again at night......but I dont do it often enough to discourage it from nursing....1cc/oz at a feeding. |
Thank you all so much for the replies. She is still gaining and looking good :) I'm just not used to such a tiny little thing. Vet said they all look great...just keep an eye on things. Thanks all |
Sm, Md, Lg pic is the cutest!!!!! Good luck with the babies. |
You should be weighing your puppies every day. I weigh twice a day for the first week. You want to make sure they are always gaining or at least staying the same if you are weighing twice a day. Any loss and I'd be really scared. Little puppies like this can go downhill very quickly. Also, be sure they are nice and warm before you feed them. If the little crawls away from the others and the heating pad you will want to warm them up before tube feeding or bottle feeding if that's what you are doing. Good luck! |
I have to agree with supplementing her. I had to do that with the last litter. Peppermint was the tiny girl and she was 2 oz at birth but her sucking reflex wasn't as strong as the other two girls. She would fall asleep in the middle of nursing. I ended up supplementing her and as you can see from the Dexter and Peppermint videos she is doing good. |
Just an update on S, M, L ... They are one week today Small is weighing in at 4.1 oz Medium is 7.5 oz Large is 9.6 oz All doing great :) They went last week to get their tails docked ... pretty sad to watch :( Little girl was too small so I take her tomorrow - he did the twisting method so not much blood loss at all but they cried for days!! |
Our Yorkie is a miniture and was mated with a tea cup, she had them Saturday morning and we have just weighed them. She did have 4 but one was born dead and I was unable to revive it, but we have 3 really happy healthy pups now. The girls are 6.1oz & 5.2oz and the little boy is 6.5oz so from reading the posts above they seem to be a really good size. Thank goodness Poppy has taken too it really well as a first time Mom and the pups are healthy and happy. |
