Ultrasound question Hi my girl had an ultra sound done on day 31 of her pregnancy. The vet thinks that their is 3 puppies but could be two. I wanted to know what you think about US results? Are they an accurate result? Also she was mated 3 times First mating on the 21st 2nd 23th and 3rd 25th. Now she had an US a week ago like on day 25 and nothing could be seen. Do you think they may be more puppies growing in there and do you think I should have another US done in another 10days time? Has anyone experienced having a US done twice and seeing a difference in the number of puppies? Thanks guys |
yes, I had a bitch show 2 puppies on day 31, and none on day 45, vet told me she had reabsorbed the puppies, maybe due to age she was 5, on day 64 she whelped 4 puppies.. that is why I do x rays on day 59 now, and not Ultra sounds.. hugs, best of luck with your girl.. |
Hi thanks for your reply. My girl had her first US and nothing showed. Then like a week later she showed 2-3. So do you think they may be more in there growing but not big enough to show on the US. The puppies that showed were low down in the abdomen and nothing was in the middle or top near the ribs. |
Anyone else experienced anything like this???? |
I took care of a pregnant yorkie about a year ago.. I took her for 3 ultrasounds... Each time, there were 3 pups visible... In the end, she whelped 5 babies. An x ray around day 59 may give you a better idea! |
I have been thru all that ultra sound stuff...if you have a vet that is not very good at reading ultra sounds, you can have an issue! I always have an x-ray done on day 58. |

It is all about the ability of the vet doing the Ultra Sound. We used to live in another state, and our vet could, based on the Ultra Sound at day 31 after the last breeding tell us which breeding the mother took. This was based on measurements of the puppies and certain development characteristics he could see on his screen. He was also normally very close to the day she would welp. A few times he missed on the number of puppies, but not very often. After moving to the state we live in now, we found it was a waste of money because the vets we tried charged a lot of money for the Ultra Sound, and really couldn't give us much worthwhile information. We now depend on an x-ray instead. |
I use Xrays as do my breeder friends. Mostly they are accurate day 58 59. sometimes pups can almost hide behind another. Still Xray good value for the money; and US relies so much on the skill of the operator to give accurate results, and at least here costs a whole lot more. |
Vets are really good here! Very thorough and very reasonable. Bit I get all my veterinary care for free so happy days :) |
You would likely get more accurate results if you waited a little later in the pregnancy to have an US done--sometime around day 55. |
US results are not always accurate for counting the number of pups. Unless you have someone who is very good at reading them or the vet has state of the art equipment that can pick up heartbeats. It is best to have xrays done to get a more accurate count. But wait until day 58. Just as an example. I had a bitch I had an ultrasound done on on day 30 of her pregnancy vet said 2 to 7. she had 4 puppies. My current bitch had her xray done on day 58 and it clearly showed 3 pups and she had 3 pups. |
I Would get an Xray done after day 46, preferably on day 53. You will be able to see the exact number of puppies with accuracy ! US are not reliable as far as my own experience. Good Luck . XOXO |
How do you count the days with the pregnancy? From the first mating or last mating? I also went back for another US and it showed more puppies. So its gone from 2-3 now to 4-5 :~ |
I start counting from day of first mating, here's a great site with a fabulous calendar. http://debbiejensen.com/date.html |
I count from the first day of the mating and i always rely on the Xray for the exact number of puppies. It is almost 100 % accurate. XOXO |
