Floppy Ears on YT puppies Hi - I understand the standard YT has erect ears. A lot of puppies seem to have slightly floppy ears. Is this normal? Do they straighten up with age or does floppy indicate poor breeding? Thanks! |

Yorkie ears My first fur babies ears have always been up. But my last two girls where floppy then one day one ear went up then a couple days later up went the other. So cute either way I just love love yorkies! |
I don't believe floppy ears indicates poor breeding at all. The main reason ears on a Yorkshire Terrier are sometimes floppy is because the hair on the upper portion of the ear is not kept trimmed short through puppyhood and through teething. The hair weighs down the ear, and then the cartilage in the ear itself begins to thicken and set as the puppy ages. If the hair is not trimmed, the ear cartilage thickens and sets and they stay floppy instead of erect. Also, when YTs are teething their ears can flop. This is due to the temperature fluctuations caused by teething. Depending on how long a puppy teeths for (as all are different, some take up to a year)...ear flopping from teething can cause ears to stay permanently floppy too. You can always tape the ears of your Yorkie puppy if you want them to be in accordance with the AKC standard of erect ears. If done properly it does absolutely zero damage to the puppy apart from annoying them that there is something unfamiliar on their head (like a bow or hair band). |
I neglected to mention...Bella is a Yorkie mix, and her ears were floppy for the first three and a half months. Then...one day I was making meringue for a pie. I turned the mixer on full speed (I don't know about everyone else but the meringue I make doesn't do anything unless the mixer is on high). In any case...it was the first time I'd used the mixer since we got Bella. It scared the living daylights out of her, and ever since she's had erect ears. ...true story. No, I am NOT a breeder, but I wanted to put my two cents worth in here, since I've been informed by very reputable breeders regarding Yorkie puppy ears. |
Thanks all. Very helpful. So floppiness does not necessarily mean poor breeding. Personally I love yorkies either way - just want to make sure my next baby is from healthy parents. |

Floppy Ears Raelle is 11mths old and weighs in at all of 4lbs...ears are floppy.... Orion is 8mths old and weighs in at 8lbs his ears are also floppy. is to too late for either of these pups for their ears to stand erect? Orion is still teething...chewing everything he can get his mouth around..lol! any suggestions? |

it doesn't hurt to try to get them up...first i would shave all the hair off the whole ear...and then tape them up and leave the tape in for about 5 days then remove tape...if ears are still flopping retape....if i don't keep 3 of my girls ears trim they will flop since they have thick hair... |
