Weaning? At what age do the pups start too wean? My guys are 30 days today. And what should I wean them too? Thanks people.:D |
I followed someone's suggestion I found here, I started offering my pups ground up puppy food (I smashed it with a hammer, but you could use a blender or etc.) when they started to be up moving around alot, also put out fresh water at all times. Mom still fed them till about 8 weeks old and it worked like a charm, they just gradually started eating the puppy kibble and it was a fairly easy process. Good luck with your pups and the weaning! |
As soon as the pups are around 4 weeks old I introduce them to the ground up dry puppy food. I grind it dry in a blender until it is the consistency of corn meal. I leave a small bowl of the ground up food in their pen along with a small bowl of water. The momma is likely to eat the ground food too but that is fine because she will be teaching the pups to eat it and the food is good for her. After about a week of feed the ground up food I also put out a small plate of food consisting of the ground up dry food with some canned Pedigree puppy food added to it. I mix it well so it is like a moist meal. |
Puppy Gruel, Wheaning At that age you should be offering them puppy gruel, they are still a bit too young for hard food. At four weeks I give my pups gruel and than gradually introduce them to a thicker gruel before they get dry kibble. 5 weeks old (shake like) 1 c goats milk 1/2 can puppy food (mashed) 1 jar baby food (beef flav) Mix into a shake like consistency. If needed add more goats milk to get the right consistency. Heat/warm, put into a shallow glass dish and serve. If hesitant put a bit on your finger and put in there mouth. Serve a little at a time, keep refrigerated and heat as needed. 6 weeks old (malt like) 1 1/2 c goats milk (add more if needed) 1/2 can puppy food (mashed) 1 jar baby food (beef flav) 1/2 c puppy kibble (ground) using a blender/food processer 7 weeks old (putty like) 1/2 can puppy food (mashed) 1 c puppy kibble (ground up) using a blender/food processer replace goats milk with water/enough to keep moistened This is also when I introduce them to dry kibble. I put both out and let them choose. Be present when first giving them dry kibble to see that they are able to handle it. |

I start weaning at 4 weeks old. I start with goats milk and baby rice cereal. |
I kind of let mom let me know when to start the weaning process. It's usually between 4-5 weeks that she starts spending less time with the pups & that would be when I introduce baby rice cereal mixed with goats milk, then switch over to ground puppy kibble with goats milk and/or water. I switch to dry kibble when I see them digging into mom's bowl of food, and yes.....ALWAYS watch them eat it until I am comfortable that they can chew and/or swallow it okay. The kibble I use is fairly small, so it's usually not a problem. |
