Overweight puppy at 7 days???? I am new to this forum and I am so glad I found it! I have a 3yr old male yorkie Wicket and a 10month old female yorkie Coco. I had planned on breeding them when Coco was 2-3, but apparently they had other ideas. Despite all our efforts during her first heat she ended up pregnant. We kept them separate for sleeping and outside time. When they were together coco had a doggie diaper on. Apparently it wasn't enough. I didn't find out she was expecting until Dec. 21. I had suspected for a week or so, but didn't have it confirmed until then. Turns out she only was having one pup which is why it was so hard to detect; he came Christmas morning by emergency c-section. She was pushing for almost 3 hrs by the time the vet took her into surgery. (I called him when no puppy showed after an hour.) The vet said b/c he was the only puppy he got all the nutrients and was too big for her to have on her own. I'm happy to say they are both doing really well now and we call him Rudy short for Rudolph. What I'm worried about now is Rudy seems to be really big! He is 7 days old today and weighs in at 1.2lbs. Mom is 5lbs and dad is 7lbs. Will his weight even out as he gets older or will he be larger than mom and dad? Also is there anything I should be watching for in Coco since she is so young and we didn't know until the end? I'm really worried that this might have caused her life long harm. I did not want this to happen to her this young. I can't get over the thought that my puppy had a puppy. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! |
All I have to say is that I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope you get your female spayed [if it wasn't done during the Emerg. C Section] That's a horrible thing to put your li'l girl through especially since you probably had no clue what you were doing in breeding them. Are they even registered and proven worthy of being bred? 10 months was far too young for her to have her first puppy/ies, you should have kept them separate the WHOLE time through the heat plus a little extra after. |
He is a big guy but Im sure he will slim down some when he is more active. Best of luck |
A 7 day of puppy cannot be overweight. Please spay your girl so that she does not have to go through any more csections in the future. |

To the OP, I agree with Chachi, being the only one, he is going to be nice and plump for awhile, but as he gets older and more active, he's gaining should slow down. Good luck with your puppy:) |
Thank you for the feed back. As I said before it was NOT my intention for her to breed so young. This was the last thing I wanted to put her through. I am concerned at the puppies size and worried about the long term effects this will have on coco. Since I am unable to have children my dogs are my life. I would never intentionally do anything to harm them! We kept them separate as much as we could. When they were together she was wearing a diaper. I never saw them tie. The reason I am is here to learn as much as I can to help her through this. I would appreciate it if those who do not have anything helpful to add please keep your comments to your self. Its hard enough watching my baby go through this without others beating me up about it. |
I didn't berate her/him in any way. But thanks. She didn't have a clue when she bred them because she wouldn't have bred a 7lb male with a 5lb male. And chances are neither dog was worthy of being bred. But who knows I could be wrong, I just hope she spays her girl so she never has to go through that again. I care more about the dogs than I do the feelings of the owner. I have been given crap plenty of times be it here or on other forums... I stuck around, sucked it up, and learned A LOT. And that I'm thankful for. |

There is your answer, and I agree. He is big because he was the only one taking in all of the nutrition she was providing for a litter of pups. Just turns out it was only one, big healthy plump pup! |
