new puppy gasping hasnt cried hi there neighbors had shihtzu puppies today, the owner wasnt home when she had her puppies and had found one cold in the sac, got the call ame over have warmed him up, aspirating his lungs, slung him, i havent heard a cry yet and it seems as though he is gasping i cant hear fluid in his lungs and have gotten all liquid out he just seems to take deep breaths, im afraid to nurse him w mom as i've never had this problem w my yorkies, any advice |
If he is actually gasping then surely he needs a vet? But in saying Thst, my pups are all usually quiet, so not crying wouldn't concern me- excessive crying would- but the gasping is cause for concern. If he was in the sac long then he may unfortunately have irreparable damage, so... Vet. Hope he is ok, poor wee mite. Let us know when they let you know? |

Glad to see this! |
Glad everything worked out OK. For future reference, it is not uncommon for a puppy that was too long in the sac (or one that doesn't come around immediately) to gasp. Clear the lungs, make sure the gum and tongue color is pink and wait for a while. A puppy that is gasping is unable to cry until the gasping is over. The gasping is nature's way of getting enough oxygen into a distressed puppy. Also, never try to get a gasping puppy to nurse or supplement it. The milk or formula will go into the lungs. Best wishes to all. Charlie |
