If she is not in active labor her "water" didn't burst. Dogs are not like women whose water breaks. Each puppy is contained within a "sac". During labor it is possible for a sac to burst before the puppy is expelled. This is known as a dry birth. |

(and I didn't explain missys story right- we noticed the wet when it would prob have been there a while, we wouldn't have had her to the vets a heck of a lot faster had we noticed it earlier... I'm a panicker, but my vet doesn't mind- thankfully!) |
Still Waiting You were right went to the after hours vet and she said that her water had not broken. It must have been a lot of pee :P We are still waiting she is having me still take her temp even though I feel like her temp is beyond erratic. She is still digging and panting periodically on and off. So she said that it should happen soon but be patient. If she has not had them by Tuesday we will do another x-ray. Then I will have to decide whether we do a oxytocin shot or a c-section. So I am just waiting. I really hope we do not have to do a c- section. I am not one for surgery but if it necessary i will do it. Yes her milk has come in. It has been in for a couple days now. I will put her temps here if anyone has any input I would greatly appreciate it. I take them at 8:00 am, 3:00pm and 8:00 pm. Day 57 =Am 101.03 AN.100.62 PM 100.42 Day 58=Am 99.83 An 99.85 PM 99.42. Anything New? |
Checking in for an update |
I just posted in another thread in this section. You are going through what I just did until last Friday when my Biewer finally whelped her litter. It was 3-4 days of wonder (and slight) worry. After the fact, I've decided that all that we see (or think we see) in those days before real labor starts are the silent & some what invisible ways the mom & pups are getting ready for birth. Of course, having decided that now...........no doubt the next litter I have, I will be waiting, wondering, (and slightly) worrying once again. Good luck with your girl & her litter. Hope they come soon, all healthy & well! |
LOL, just like a human pregnancy, the last few days seem a LOT longer than the early ones..I do the same..I worry sick, walk around check her a million times and worry some more... is the mother on us... she will have her litter when it her time, wonder words from my mentor...LOL,once day I will follow them... can't wait to hear she whelped safely .. hugs |
OK I could not wait till Tuesday so we just got back from the vet. We did another x-ray and to our surprise we are having 4 now not 3 :) Vet said she looks good and we talked about doing a c-section on Friday if no pups come.( I am still not sure if I want to wait that long but for someone who wanted to induce a little while ago she seems to be putting it off now) I do have a question though on the x-ray I noticed all the pups are butt and feet first is this something to worry about?? I asked the vet and she said that they will correct themselves and if not she will be fine. She also said she would be fine to have them alone while I am not home which actually really made me wonder on her expertise as a vet. I just keep going over and over it........I may call around and get some other opinions tomorrow!! Actually I am going to get some other opinions tomorrow :) Sorry I am probably just being ridiculous but She is my baby girl!!! |
I would never leave one alone to whelp  anything can go wrong |
Right, My thoughts exactly! Plus i don't like the fact that when we started this Bella only weighed 8 pounds and today she almost weighed 13!!! That seems like a lot for a little dog! Plus the vet made the comment " Wow pups have gotten big .... That is what we like to see) Now why the Hell do we want them that big??? Healthy yes but big No. The more I sit here and go over the conversation the more I am kicking myself for not speaking up. I am calling other vets in my area tomorrow for a second opinion. I am not happy right now not happy at all. ........... Called my breeding mentor who is furious I might add ! He said get another opinion like now. He said" Never leave any dog alone to whelp because to many complications could arise! Your vet is a quack" I have always used this vet and never had any problems but I have never really had anything like this happen before either. Not sure what to think right now :( |
My vet is Westside Animal Hospital in Fort Wayne Indiana. Anyone else had problems or heard of any?? |
what? WHELPING ALONE? IS THAT VET NUTS?.... ok, I am done... good thing you are a good mommy, the pups should correct themselves right before whelping, but again anything can happen, my girl is only about 34 days pregnant and I just cancelled my vacation today because I WONT let her alone thru pregnancy and whelping. get that second opinion tomorrow, and now is just a waiting game on when she is ready to let those puppies down...;) hugs, |
Just reading your thread and wanted to wish you well... You sound like a very stressed out fur mommy!! Hugs!!! And prayers for your baby!! |
wow.. it is hard to say anything about you or the vets, how is your female doing besides nesting signs? Is she stressed? Sick? throwing up? I am wondering why you would be considering a c-section if all is apparently normal? Not every dog whelp on day 63... i have had a few whelping dates varying from day 56 to day 72 and actually most went smooth... I only call for a c-section if it is really needed. Sorry i am a bit tired but i am trying to make sense of what it is going on. best luck, XOXO |

keep vigilant and alert other than that watch and love is all you can do for now...at this point I clean her vulva a couple of times a day with a white warm towel cloth, just to make sure she is not discharging anything that I can't see... hugs, |
I am so tired at this point :( I called around for second opinions and everyone said that no she should not whelp alone. I called one vet who said that if i brought her in he would probably do a Oxycontin shot and watch her???? I have no idea what the right thing to do is at this point. I just want her to be ok. She seems fine just sleeps all day. She has not shown any more signs of whelping. She actually has stopped digging as of yesterday evening. I am also concerned with how much weight she has gained she does not look fat just all belly. She started at about 8 pounds and at the vet last night was almost 13. I am worried the pups are going to be too big. Bottom line is I have never been so stressed out in my life. I don't think I was this stressed when I had my kids lol. I guess I am going to take her to the Vet that said he would see her today at 2:00 and depending on what he thinks go from there. I just feel like my Vet is so irresponsible for saying she can Whelp alone.!!!! Would love to hear your thoughts on the matter guys :) |
Calm down I can feel your anxiety and she is feeling it too... I KNOW is very hard but you NEED to relax, make a cup of chamomile tea and sip it slowly...LOL next to her and a good movie or book, when she is ready she will, remember all that weight is not just puppies, is placenta and water just like us.. I know how hard it is believe me, having a pregnant bitch is not for the faint of heart..LOL you are almost there.. just try to calm down and you will see she will whelp for you very soon.. pm me if you need to talk, I will pm you my phone if you like.. hugs |
I'm so glad you went for the other opinions! Would you be able to get another scan to check everyone is ok? With her weight, remember that you have to take into account a placenta per pup (so at least 4), and that will weigh a fair bit as well, and another (more competent) vet checking head vs. pelvis size wouldn't hurt either- to check she can whelp them ok. My vet always says he hates giving an oxy shot until the full labour has started (and ideally one pup born)- he very rarely induces as he has seen it go wrong too many times, and if she isn't dilated by the time the oxy kicks in with full, hard contractions it increases the likelihood of c-sect. I usually would get an oxy shot nearing the end of a big litter if she is struggling, and vet likes to check that she is completely 'vacated' before telling me I can calm down a bit again! But that may just be his personal experience with it- I'm sure others will have very differing opinions in that to! (sorry for repeating you carmen- I didn't post it right, and it only went up there now) she's Very right... If your girl sees and feels her mommy being worried, she'll hold on to those pups for dear life!! |
I hope all goes well with your little mama:thumbup: |
Ok got back from the new vet. As soon as he saw her he asked me what was my main priority puppies or Bella?? I said Bella so he said ok then we will do a c-section Thursday morning I will give her till then and hopefully we won't have to do the c-section. I said ok but what is the difference in treatment. He said if you were more concerned with puppies than I would do a c-section right now. So I am even more stressed I don't want to lose anyone. So stressed right now. So stressed :( |
You poor thing.....just relax.......all will be ok!!! Before long your babies will be here!!! Your Bella & my Bella are sisters I think. (She delivered yesterday at 68 days) Thought we would be doing a section too!!! |
Keeping you and Bella in my prayers...hopefully she will go into labor and not need the c-section!! I pray that she and all of her babies be placed in gods hands and she will be just fine and all babies will be healthy.... Big hugs to you!! |
Well believe me, I do understand your stress, and know it's easier said than done...........but you have got to try to relax some. Bella can sense it for sure and that could contribute to her holding back on labor. I do have a question or two..... Quote:

Again, I know how stressed you are, I can feel it from your posts. But please try to calm yourself. Chances are she & her pups will be just fine and here before long. Hold your Bella close, comfort her, rub her belly, talk to her about how anxious you are to meet her babies. Sending you good vibes & wishes for a safe whelp. BTW....don't worry; butt first delivery is normal, though head first is preferred. |

How many days is she now ? |
did he do x rays, are the babies calcified already? by my experience if Bella was my bitch, I would have done x rays and listen for movement and heart beats and just wait it out, I hate unnecessary c-sections, if she is not in stress the pups are moving and you can hear their hearts , everything is going fine.. you NEED to take a deep breath, have some TEA and relax mom,she will whelp for you in no time... hugs, |

Ok at 8:00am this morning she had a small amount of what i would say looked like bloody show.( In a human pregnant women that is what i would say it looked like). So I called my boss to let her know I had a horrible migraine and could not make it in today :) At about 12:30pm she started digging frantically. Then at about 4:00pm she started panting and shaking like a leaf. first pup came out feet first at 6:50pm weighing in at 5.6oz a little black and tan girl. Then pup #2 came at 7:19pm a big Chocolate girl feet first gave her a little trouble but momma got her out. She weighed 6.3 oz. Pup # 3 came at 8:52pm perfect birth, weighed 5.9 oz. A little Chocolate male. The last pup a little boy also perfect birth, black and tan weighed in at 5.2 oz. All are doing well and mom is relaxing. Thank you all for helping me through this :) I thank God that we did not have to do a c-section and that I have beautiful healthy pups. Right now we are calling then in order that they came #1 Tink #2 Twix #3 Tod and #4Titan. I know the next 12 weeks are going to fly by but i can't wait to see their personalities emerge. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR ENCOURAGING WORDS!!!!!!!!! I will try to get pics up soon :) Right now this grandma is going to bed ;P.......Right like i can sleep with the angels right there LOL |
She never had a temp dip and never went off food. She was eating in between pups LOL |
Congrats on your new babies :) waiting for pics |
