The Best Way to Say NO. I have had a few potentinal new owners for my pups, but after looking into their background and finding out they are breeders of really tiny Yorkies I told them I already sold my small baby boy. This lady have so many different breeds of dogs and other animals like monkeys, birds, & cats. I didn't feel like she could have cared for my pup the way he needed and deserved. I am looking for the best way to discourage these people and to tell them "Not in a million years will you ever get any of my pups!" In what way do you do tell people that you do not want to sell a pup to them? Thanks. |
No! You as the breeder set the tone..you start out stating what type home YOU are looking to place your pups. You want a pet home, limited regs etc..the breeders will thank you for your time and hang up. You ask the questions...you do not say.."what are you looking for"..you say.." I have a litter I am placing in the right situation. I want a pet home only, no breeding kennels, thank you for understanding my position..If the breeder lies, and they do all the time to me. Check them out and when they call back, remind them you are not selling to a breeding home..goodbye PS..Limited Regs stops breeders...a spay/neuter contract stops them also. |
Just say "NO, i will not sell to your stinkin puppy miller!!!!" heheheh j/k |
Sexcbrucelee, That is so funny. I swear I am not trying to stalk you on the forum, but your post are usually informative or funny. By the way, I am thinking about going to limited registration. Thanks ya'll! |
oh don't worry about it.. i like be stalk..ehehhehe especailly by women.. i'm assuming you are a woman right?? ehheheheeh j/k well i'm not sure if i want to go that route but it is on my mind. cus I do understand that you don't want your pups to be bred... but also looking from a buyer's point of view..I don't want anyone to put a limit on what I can or can't do especially if i'm paying $1500 for the pups.. let me decide...i might or might not... at least i have the option... as for myself.. i try to find a common ground on this topic...oh btw.. i have been told that i'm funny looking also.... |
limited I do not want to buy a limited either..so I go to breeders who know me and do not limit. When is comes to placing my pups, I must know the person in order to allow breeding...does that sound snobbish? So be it! I had some bad times when I did not limit, some of my Yorkies wind up in miserable stiuations. I have had breeders send family members to buy a pup, then turn the pup over to them. Even terrific pets home can go bad...a divorce led to a nice male going to a commerical kennel...pet owner moved to an apt, could not take puppy. Put ad in paper, the rest is too sad. I ask that all pet woners allow me to take my pup back if anything changes adn they can not keep it. Now I sell to pet owners with spay/neuter,limited regs..no one balks at paying the price..they want a pet and are happy to spay/neuter. If someone is serious about breeding.,honest, caring, then we talk..I am not oppose to helping..but I can not sleep at night if my babies are in a mill. |
YorkieRose, I agree with you. I don't want my babies to end up in puppy mills either. And like you said, there are bad owners out there. That is why in my contracts I put the "If you can not longer care for your pup please allow me first option to buy the pup back." I have seen where someone took a yorkie to the pound because it grew to 8 lbs. What if someone took one of my babies to the pound because they couldn't potty train it or something. I usually don't limit my registrations but I am kinda afraid not to. My first two pups I sold went to reallly good girls, we keep in touch, (OH & AL) I cried so much worrying about them that my husband offered to fly to OH & AL and pay the people their money back and a little extra for thier troubles. But we both knew they needed to be where they could be spoiled individually. Both girls have told me they have spent a fortune in accessories and clothes for their new babies and they send me pictures. I could not have asked for better homes. As you can see I am really concered where my babies will end up as most breeders are. Thanks for the information. It has been a great help. |
wow you guys.. you have make me think twice about how I go about finding homes for my huskies and my future yorkies... before I didn't think to deep into it.. but when I hold those precious in my arms.. i just want to keep them all...train them all to pull sled and go to the Iditerod...ehehheehhehe |
Good lord! $1500.00 is a lot to pay. I hope you a least get a good contract with that. For $1500.00 I would deliver the pup to the door. But my are not show dogs. I main do this for all the people who want yorkies and can't afford the high prices. I love my babies and just want to spread the joy. I can't imagine life without them. |
ahhaahahah $1500 is the going price for a female yorkie in Houston. Sure you can find some for $1000 but rare.. they hover around $1250 - $1500. I told my wife if someone pay $1000 for my pups and they meet our requirements... I will drive and deliver to their front door even if they live in San Antonio or Dallas..heheheheheh she thinks i'm crazy..hehehehheh well I did drove 3 hours just to go buy hercules...ehhehehe |
If someone offered me $5,000.00 for one of my babies, and I felt it wasn't a good enviroment for them, I dealt if I'd try to find a polite way to tell them you can't adopt my puppy. You could tell them you have a waiting list and I will get back to you. |
I would say.. i'm waiting on the highest bidder.. and so far the highest is $10,000. heheheheheh |

That is a great idea! Thanks! |
My babies also leave with a limited registration. You know, all we hear is find a reputable breeder, make sure you find a breeder that is someone you can trust, breeder, breeder, breeder and that is good.... well it goes the other way also. I have actually turned people away before and I basically tell them that a yorkie is probably not the dog for them. I had a person at my house to see the puppies once and in the 2 hours they were there, he asked about the housebreaking more than 10 times. I started to wonder what would happen to my baby in his house if it peed on the rug. That's all I could think about and told them they should sleep on the decision because maybe a yorkie wasn't for them. I would rather they stay with me, than go just to get the money. I always figure my puppies already have a good home and if need be, they stay right here. Oh and regarding the housebreaking, I tell people that it takes time and work and you get out of it what you put into it. It doesn't just magically happen. www.simplyyorkies.com |
pups I do not let the pup go the first time I meet the buyer. If all goes well, they can put down a deposit..then wait two weeks to get the pup. I do not like spur of the moment purchases. Two weeks is enough time to make a vet appointment..get ready. I ask the new owner to go from my house to the vet appt..then I call and talk with the vet afterwards to make sure they made an appointmemt for the next vaccine series, show them the spay/neuter contract etc...aren't I a bitch? We have something very precious and I feel like that life is my responsiblity forever..the puppy is here because of me and deserves the best care. The more you act like you do not want to get "rid" of your pups, the more people beg you for them..then you get the very best, most caring types of pet lovers at your door. They have been looking for months and have no desire to buy from a "rush them out the door type breeder". |
hoe much do you charge for your pups yorkierose? and what is youre health guarantee????.... i dont think youre a bitch at all, i think yorue CAREFUL, and no one can be TOO CAREFUl these days, especially with these precious lil guys/girls |

I have had quite a few that are really concerned about the potty training too. I work with my dogs on potty training as soon as possible. But you can potty train any dog if you work with it and have patience. This concerns me too. Do they have the patience? Are they going to work with it or do they just expect him to sit on a toilet and flush? And YORKIEROSE, I have printed your response and I am going to talk to my husband about incorporating this into our process of selecting people. Also do any of you make the people fill out application? I haven't yet. My husband and I are usually good judge of characters. Thanks again for all the good advise from everyone. |
references I think it is good to ask for references the same as the buyer checking the breeder out. If they had pets in the past I ask to speak to the vet who cared for them. Many people have sent me a letter from their vet before we even meet or bring it with them. |
Yorkierose You are obviously a very knowledgeable breeder, would you please give me your thoughts on Brewer's Yeast and Calcium tablets? I know they are completely different but was wondering do you use them? I have heard that calcium tablets can cause problems, but that is what my vet gave me and I really respect his opinion but I would really respect and appreciate yours as well. Thanks so much. |
suppliments I can only pass on to you what I have learned from other breeders. No artifical calcuim before whelping. I feed cottage cheese, American cheese, yogart, even vanilla pudding or ice cream in small amounts to provide calcium. I am told calcuim pills during gestation can cause parathyorid problems...after whelping you give calcuim pills...but I crushed them up. I used to find polka dotted poop...calcuim pills were passing through their systems undigested. I stopped using pills a few years ago and went to TUMS. One half crushed in food in the AM and another half in the PM..works for my girls. I give them all the food they want with calcuim in it..your girl has 3 pups, which is not a huge litter to drain her reserves, but it can happen of she is not a good eater or makes too much milk. Brewers yeast can not hurt, whether it helps for milk producing is something I do not know..people used to use it to prevent flea problems. Lots of good wishes for happymom and babies. |
oops Sorry, I thought I was replying to the new mommy and pups...reread your post name..LOL |
YorkieRose- How do you use yeast to prevent fleas? I have never heard of this before. Do you put it on their coat or do they ingest it?? Does it work? Has anyone tried this? Fleas can get bad here so any tips are potentially helpful. |
Chachi, I have heard that too. I have tried Brewer's Yeast with Garlic. That is why I wanted to hear YorkieRose's opinion about it. As for the fleas, I read that fleas don't like the garlic. I don't have a flea problem yet, (Knock on wood) but speaking of wild things to do for fleas: I read on a groomers forum that a man used AVON'S Skin So Soft when he ran out of dog shampoo and brought it into the groomers and she said not only did it take care of fleas that it also help take out tangles. She said they brushed right out. I would be too scared to try it. |
We use the skin so soft to keep mosquitos away so it makes sense that it might work on fleas also. It seems like it would make them like a greasy little pig though. I am using advantage right now but I've heard alot of complaints that it wasn't working. I quess time will tell. |
Fleas In MD I had a system to prevent fleas...each year the yard and house were spayed..about the third time we did this I never had a problem again...my Yorkies were kept on concrete playyards or wooden decking. As a breeder I found dirt/grass to be a problem for me..more of a tendancy to get fleas/worms and parasites. Not sure how the fleas are going to act here in FLorida...my Yorkies are in the house or walked in a stroller..excuse me, I walk, they ride. I do know the flea meds from the vet work...as retired groomer, I found few coming to me with fleas in the last 5 years...fleas carry tapeworms. |
YorkieRose, You walk your dogs in a stroller? How cute is that to imagine. Don't let that get back to my dogs! They would pack up their duds and you'd have three little Yorkies knocking on your door. Ha!Ha! I guess that works great to keep them from getting exposed to other "things" like germs and such. That is just too cute. A stroller! |
stroller I saw a great stroller in Foster& smith..it is inclosed and the pups can not jump out. You can take them out at any age, whether they can walk on a lead or not. The older ones like it too..I do not like strange dogs coming up to mine..seen too many Yorkies attacked by big dogs..Yorkies can be busy bodies and stick their noses where they do not belong...also keeps the fleas off them in grassy areas. ORINSKY...I did not see your post...I give a one year guarantee against genetic problems..as to price, I do not have pups for sale to pet homes this year. Right now I am breeding some breed/show litters. |
