First Litter Whelped - Lost 2 Well, my first litter came at day 58. 3 Females, one male. We lost the 3rd female that night, her intestines were born on the outside (anyone ever have that??) what causes it? The 4th one who was less then 2 oz. died on day 3. The first 3 days were horrific. The mother kept getting out of the box and picking the tiny one up by her head and throwing her at me, putting her under beds, in closets, etc. It was so sad and the little one kept crying and crying and crying. The vet said she would have eventually died, and probably would have died sooner, if My daughters and I hadn't started to bottle feed her. She wouldn't nurse from Mom. Now Mom is calm, cool and collect and girl #1 AND boy are doing wonderful! They are eating like crazy, their eyes have just opened, and she's being a great mom. Those first three days were unbelievable, as I had to sleep literally right next to the whelping box to keep the mom in with them. I guess she just knew something was wrong. The vet said she would have thrown that pup out in the wild to get it away from the rest of the litter so she could protect them. It was quite an experience. I'll keep everyone posted on the these two. Is that normal to loose two? #1 was almost 5 oz. and #2 was 3 1/2. The last two were 2.5 and under 2 oz. They were the two that passed. |
I'm sorry you lost 2, but I'm glad you have babies left to love. I can't wait for pics, and best of luck with your puppies |
So sorry you lost the two :( But so glad the others are doing well. Sounds like it was a very stressful time for everyone. Maybe a breeder will have some answers on if that was normal or not. Keep us updated and post pics when you can! |
Having the intestines on the outside rather than in the inside does happen. It is not a every day occurance, but it is not unheard of. It is so sad to see it though. There has not been any determination to date as to why this happens. Her kicking the runt out is common as well. She is only trying to focus on the strong, and not the weak. If you plan another litter maybe placing the mother in a inclosed whelping area would be better. I am glad to though that you still have to furbabies, Congratulations and good luck. |
Sorry for the loss. Wish you the best on the others and mother. Good luck! MuffinsMom |

Im so sorry you lost two of the babies. Was Happy to hear mommy and other two are doing good. Good Luck. |
My sympathies to you for the loss of those 2 precious angels. Sometimes it's just meant to be and there's not much you could do. I'm just glad to hear that the other two are doing well, just don't let your guard down keep a close eye on them with mom and make sure that she's keeping them warm and feeding them enough, you don't want to take the chance and loose either one. Keep an eye on mom too... |
I agree next time have her a box with lid. It helps for you to just sit nearby being very calm(yeah right) & just encourage her. When they have 4-58 days is right on the edge of being long enough. Good luck & congrats. |
Congratulations on your litter. I have had one puppy with the intestines on the outside of their body. He under went surgery right after he was born. The vet placed the tiny organs back into his stomach. He was doing great for 3 1/2 weeks and developed an infection and didn't make it through his second surgery. Put depending on the severity of this usually depends on whether they will survive. I can remember the medical name... sorry. It doesn't happen a lot, but there are occurances. Sorry, for you losses. |
Congratulations on your new litter . I am sorry that you lost 2 . |
