a few questions these puppys are 5 weeks old now and i have been giving them their soggy food. my question is how often should I be feeding them? ahia is still feeding occasionally also. they are not by any means starving. all are gaining weight nicely. I don't want to over feed them but I don't want them being hungry either. not sure how often to give them food. as pups I know they will eat as often as i offer it. LOL. I am also trying to cut back on food & water for ahia to help dry her up. she seems to be most hungry at night. am I doing this right? and one more question for right now... at what time is it safe to have her spayed? |

I keep food down at all times... what the puppies aren't eating mom is taking care of that...lol. So I have one down and one on reserve. Ahia's milk will dry up with the weaning process, less demand from the pups will tell her body, to stop producing. If the pups were on the small side I would encourge them to nurse another week, but in your case it doesn't seem to be needed. Mom's usually take care of the weaning process naturally. We just need to jump in and add the proper food for the puppies... :) As far as spaying her I would consult your vet. I routine exam should be given to see when she would be ready for that surgery. PS.. Have I missed the pictures of the puppies??? Sure would like to see the little ones if I had. Lead me in the direction of the Pictures !!!! :D |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23407 the latest pics posted of the pups. tomorrow i will take more and give you the very latest. LOL. I take them daily. I just don't always get them on the puter. ahia has started having another discharge similar to the kind she had just after the pups were born. I am calling the vet tomorrow. she is not acting any different just the discharge. thank you both for the help. seems like something different comes up every day. they are such joys. I am going to have a hard time giving them up. i will be posting on the for sale section tomorrow probably. guish i wish i could just keep them. they are very active and loving. the biggest one is the most loving. she likes to cuddle. she is already sold. and i am keeping the other girl so i only have the 2 males to find homes for. If I keep telling my self that they will provide some lucky family with lots of fun, joy and love it will make it easier for me. I am the perfect example for 'why not everyone can breed'. From the very moment we picked up Buckeye My life has revolved around him. then ahia came and i was tied. but frankly I would not have it any other way. I get so much love from these little creatures.... and I sure do love them too. Oh I am rambling. sorry. |
If you give dry food be cautious . One of my friends lost a pup . The pup was eating normally but unfortunately , he choked on one little piece . At this age , I would prefer wet food . |
I always start my puppies on wet food , dry food is for later . Sometimes puppies are very eager to eat and can choke on dry food . |
Oh, they are just precious... Sorry I am a little slow and missed the post... But I got to see those beauties today !!!! :D :D Feel free to ramble anytime !!!! I love to hear about puppies !!! :p :p |

If mom is not nursing much....just feed her dry kibble. She will wean the pups naturally when she is ready. No need to "dry her up" as the puppies suckle less she will stop producing milk. The only exception would be a show mom who needs to get back in the ring.....then one does things differently and may make a attempt to wean the puppies sooner...so she gets her figure back quicker. LOL As for spaying check with your vet......somewhere around 6 to 7 weeks post whelp should be safe. d |
