yorkie puppy ears When do you, as breeders, step in and shave your yorkie puppy ears so that they will start standing up? My litter of 5 yorkies is 4 weeks and 3 days old. I notice that for the most part they are floppy. Occasionally, they will pull them back and they will stand for a few seconds. The hair on their body is growing rapidly. My breeder mentor gave me the answer of "depends on the puppy". That does not help me. In general, when do you start helping your yorkie babies get there ears to stand up? thank you in advance for your your response. |
Hi. about ears, I expect their ears to start popping up around 4 weeks. I shave the tips then. I think shape, size and when they pop up has a lot to do with their parents. Of all the puppies I have raised, only Ginny Joy had to have her ears taped. Her ears are up and very nice, after about a week they stayed up. I adopted her from a good breeder and she said about 1/2 her puppies have to have their ears taped. |
I usually start trimming the edges at 4-5 weeks and shaving the inside and outside of the ears with a moustache trimmer around 5-6 weeks. It doesn't hurt anything and makes it easier for the ears to go up by themselves, plus I never have to worry about taping ears later on when I do this early. :-) Teresa |
Thank you for your suggestions Thank you. I trimmed the ear hair and they are all standing. |
I'm not a breeder but both my babies ears did not stand up until they were about 10 weeks old :). I didn't have to do anything! |
Nilla's ears fight meh! I think it all depends on the individual dog(s). Nilla's ears were up before she came to me, and when she got here they fell ... I tried to tape them for 4-5 days and they fell again. She's at 17 weeks now, and they're still down. After battling her to shave them, tape them, and then try to get the tape off afterward, I decided she's cute with floppy ears anyway. Lol! I'm going with whatever happens to them happens -- will love her floppy eared or straight. |
Reading the threads about ear tapping and watching the videos on YT will help you decide if you want to tape your puppies ears. I did find a few hints, here they are. 1.Shaveing the ear hair at around 4 weeks will help ears stand up 2.Cooking oil will remove glue, gum, tape sticky, and paint from fur and skin. 3.A paper plate works well for making a pettern. Make a V shaped pattern a. you can cut two for each ear, place one on front one on back .Tape to ear b. use only one V pattern. Place piece of tape on pattern, long enough to wrap around the ear. Place on inside of ear, over lap tape on back of the ear. c. cut a two inch piece of tape. Fold ear (like a book closing) tape like wrapping a band-aid around a finger, tape will form a tube. 3. Which method you use depends on how thick the ear is and how it is bent. |

Try a premium food blend or a calcium supplement with the taping, it may work. Blessings. XOXO |

The weight of the hair holds the ears down sometimes. XOXO |
