Puppy problems :(
 

I had written a post earlier on another thread and I was advised to post here..

History:

My Yorkie of 3 years was recently attacked and killed by a sharpei. The poor thing was less than 2 lbs so I couldn't get to her in time. She was a part of the family and everyone was heartbroken over the loss. I saw an advertisement for a dog expo so I wanted to just look at the [COLOR=green ! important][COLOR=green ! important]puppies[/COLOR][/COLOR]. Well, I fell in love with one that reminded me of her. I decided to buy two puppies so the one would not be lonely. This was about a week ago. The breeder volunteered that both puppies were healthy and eating well. She did not give me any other information. I got them home and immediately the boy, Jax had yellow diarrhea and was not eating the food the breeder provided. I attributed that to nervousness and separation anxiety so I decided to give him a day. While driving, I noticed he was not acting right and took him immediately to the [COLOR=green ! important][COLOR=green ! important]vet[/COLOR][/COLOR]. He was extremely hypoglycemic. I felt irresponsible but I never had experienced a problem like that and had no clue. The vet provided me with nutri cal and told me just try everything. This morning it happened again but I was prepared with nutrical and baby food so it turned out ok. The only thing he will eat is baby food or meat. No canned or dry dog food. So here are my issues:

1. Was the breeder lying? He was only .9 lbs when i bought him and has white on him. His dad was a partiyorkie but he was sold to me as a normal yorkie. Also, in my excitement I didn't look at the papers and just noticed he was registered under The American Purebred Canine Society. Is this a legitimate organization? Finally, his teeth are only slightly above the skin. Could he be younger than 2 months and 3 weeks?

2. Any suggestions as to what I can feed him? The vet said I needed to get him on puppy food to provide the proper nutrients but no such luck. Plus, his high fat diet is making him hard to potty train and makes a huge mess.

3. Finally, will he grow out of this? He is a part of our family already but we have a fairly active lifestyle. As much as I love him I am not always around every 4 hrs or so to feed him and would be heartbroken to have another tragedy.

Do you mean the puppy weighs 9 oz.? I have bred for 35 years and would not want to care for a puppy that small myself..I never placed a puppy until it was a 1 3/4 to 2 pounds and that could take months.

Of course, the breeder lied..what vet record came with the puppy? It may be a purebred or it may not..
Your best friend will be the vet now and until this pup is of size to survive without constant care..best wishes

They just supplied me with a list of its shot and deworming records and papers to register him through American Purebred Canine Association

Hon...I am still trying to recover from the weight 9 oz....most newborns are in the 3 to 5 oz range.
The pup has no business leaving the breeder, but it is what it is....feed him every 3 to 4 hrs..and make sure he actually eats...give him Nutra-Cal..watch him 24/7...you are basically taking care of a baby bird.

If his teeth are barely showing..hes more likely to be about 5-7 weeks old....especially at that weight! Watch him very closely!! You might even give him some puppy formula...theres a recipe on here somewhere...pretty sure it is 1/2 goats milk, 1/2 distilled water, and a little bit of kayo syrup. I have a 12 week old baby at home right now and four 2 1/2 weeks old babies. The 12 weeker is 2.3 pounds and the babies range between 14-17 ounces....your guy is TINY!!!

I'm guessing there is a misunderstanding or discrepancy in the weight here.

The first post says .9 lbs, which means 9/10's of a pound = 14.4 oz.
Looking at the photos in OP's album, there is no way it is 9 oz.

Still this pup is too small/young to be anywhere except with it's mother or in the hands of a very experienced breeder who is there 24/7.

Your right...I didnt look at the pics at first! H definately looks to be more than 14 oz...makes me feel better!

No misunderstanding.. When I took him to the vet last week he weighed .94 lbs. He may be at 1lb by now since he has been eating better but that is what he weighed at the time. A lot of my friends said he looked bigger on picture.

Well, If hes alot younger than you were told, the weight makes sense...however, he is still very small!

Still very tiny, and a big responsibility. By now you understand about hypoglycemia and how to avoid it with multiple small frequent feedings through out the day.

Some finely diced chicken breast is good to add over the top of whatever kibble you give him. I used to also use the chicken broth to soften the kibble. You can also supplement with diluted canned goats milk, or cottage cheese too.

I looked at the photo of Jax...and feel much better about his size..he is at least a full pound, whcih is not great, but 9 oz is insane. He is small, but if he eats at least 4 meals per day and is watched carefully, you should be ok.

I have never known a vet to vaccine a pup of mine under a pound and I do not.
He looks to be a parti colored Yorkie...

They claim to have given him his first and second round of shots. He is due for his third but my vet advised me to hold off until he is feeling better to avoid him not eating. I have been feeding him every four hours so hopefully he has gained some weight.

Both of my puppies dad's are parti yorkies that were on sight. She did not sell me Jax as one but he does have quite a bit of white. Then again, if they were having problems with him or were needing cash they may have just been trying to get rid of him.

Make sure he has food to eat during the night...6 to 8 hr is too long for him while you sleep.
