Is it safe to give a pregnant Yorkie Frontline & Heartgard. My vet says yes but I'm not sure.

Nope.....Most vets say yes, but you are putting poisons into a dam's system that can affect the fetus.......I take the dam and stud off meds prior to the breeding...Once a male has been used for stud, I will resume meds. The dam I will put back on meds 2 weeks after the pups are born, natural way of deworming the pups. No frontline as the pups can ingest it when they are cuddled up to her....and it does work it's way through the coat and onto the nipples.....

Mary is RIGHT as always, I wean off my dam from her heartguard at least 30 days from expected heat month, I do make sure she stays pretty much in my yard too.. since I don't want to expose her to fleas or other sickness out on the road. I have a pretty good size fenced yard, so she is restricted to the yard for the duration of mating and until the babies are about 8 weeks. is just the way I learned from my mentor and the way I do it..:)

Are there precautions taken because the mother isn't getting Heartgard for a while? I thought if you had them off of Heartgard for more than a month, you had to have them tested again before they could be placed back on Heartgard?

nancy of course you have to have them retested. There are other precautions that can be taken like mosquito plants not subjecting your females to outside activity during the summer months and of course making sure that your yard and house are treated.

yes, like Mary said, my girl gets retested for heart worms, when she goes for her well check up after the babies are weaned, and start the front line and heart guard again, is just a precausion that has to be taken. also I have a smaller fenced area by the back door well lighted that I use after it gets dark so the dogs don't go out in the dark part of the property, it works great in the winter and in the summer.. and specially when you have a pregnant girl...
