Sadie has very lose stool and she is going a lot. Is this something I should be concerned with? |
have you changed her diet? after tiki had her puppies, i gave her blue buffalo canned food in addition to her regular dog food thinking higher quality etc. she had a lot of loose stools the next day. i stopped giving her the blue buffalo and the loose stools stopped. |
It's pretty common in new Moms. I've always associated it with eating the placentas. My girls have positively AWFUL poops for a couple days following whelping. Dark, loose and stinking to high heaven! Unless it continues for an extended period, she should be fine soon. Just make sure she's getting plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Actually, she needs extra water at this time to aid in milk production. Also, make sure she's eating well for you. She's the milk factory for 4 now and needs plenty of water and nutrition for the job. Now is when you'll want to start the calcium supplements, too. Make sure to keep Sadie clean back there while she's having this issue. You may not want to do a full bath for a few more days, but at least give her a booty bath regularly. The pups will gravitate towards the smell and you don't want them up in that mess. |
I useualy give my dogs Pepto Mismal and I have heard that some plain Yogart will help as well. Hope she feels better soon. |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "When It Isn't Safe to Give Your Dog Pepto Bismol It is usually safe to give your dog Pepto Bismol, although check with your vet beforehand. However, this kind of medication should not be used in animals with von Willebrand's disease or other bleeding problems. It is also not suitable for dogs that are pregnant or nursing young puppies." From this link...... Is It Safe to Give Your Dog Pepto Bismol? |
Missy is due any day now, and oh how I'm Not looking forward to her poo! Just make sure it doesn't go too runny, because then she could get a sore bum and have the poor mes, so not be as keen to nurse (my friends rottie had that problem)... I have never had to give my girls any meds for it- just let their systems sort it (if it gets too bad it's up to the vet what I'd give them) but I would need to be goats yoghurt wouldn't it? |
Well I woke up this morning and her stool is like water. I have been keeping her clean back there. I called the vet yesterday and she said it is normal but I am gonna call her this am to because it is worse not better. Thank you all for the advice. |
They can give you a five day course of a soluble med for it- it's what callie (the rottie got, and it's the same for every breed) it's odourless and apparently tasteless too- but I wouldn't personally know! :) Let u's know what they say and how she gets on! |
The vet says to let her go till Monday and if it is still the same to bring her in. She says to make sure she is eating good and drinking a lot of water. I added some rice to her dog food in hopes that that will help. I did clean her up real good Woogie ( thanks for that advice ) with everything that is going on I would have never thought about that. So I guess we just wait it out till Mon and hopefully she will be ok. |
Surely leavin it untill Monday is a little long for such a small momma? Especially when there are harmless natural things like the soluable powder to give? She will need Loads of water if it's so runny- she could dehydrate fast- but then again it may keep it runny... From tour wording 'I guess we just wait...' are you happy with her advise? Any good vet won't mind you getting a 2nd opinion if your not to sure... I also can't remember how she is cut, but it may be an idea to clip her back end really short to stop it sticking during the night... Poor baby :( ! Give her a hug from me! |
As for the poop issue, your vet is your best resource now. We can give you general info, but always keep in mind that we don't see your baby...your vet does. From your post, it doesn't sound too worrisome at this point but do keep an eye on her. Also, a vaginal discharge is normal at this time, but watch out for a smelly discharge or her running a fever. These would be signs of infection. If Sadie's coat is long, you can cut some of the hair back or just use bands to tie it out of the way to help keep it clean. Also, with a long coat, you have to watch to make sure the babies don't get tangled in it. Tying it back helps with that issue, too. |
Dawn, I believe it's not recommended due to Pepto-Bismol having 'aspirin-like' compounds in it and aspirin is not recommended for pups. With the Mom nursing, the pups of course get whatever goes into her system. |
I figured it out 4 Attachment(s) I learned how to re size pictures. Here is Sadie and her puppies |
