Nutri Cal I know that I saw mention of this before but can not find it. What benefit does Nutri Cal give to a whelping mother ? Where can I purchase it ? |
I am not sure of benefits to whelping mom so I will let the experienced ones handle that but members on here have told me that it would help guard my puppy against low blood sugar, especially if he isn't eating well so I am keeping it on hand in case it is needed. I bought mine at Petsmart for 8.99 so it was cheap, I also saw it at Petco for about the same price. |
tIve never heard of nutrical for whelping moms but Ive heard the breeders say they have nutra drops for the pups. It is the same thing though it its a vitamin suppliment with sugar in it for low blood sugar. Nutrical you can get from your vet or order online. Sometimes Petsmart has it |
My petsmart switched over to a GNC brand, so I ordered it using the YHR Amazon link. Got the tube, and the drops. Can never be too prepared! |
NutriCal is not something normally used for a whelping bitch. NutriDrops can assist in a bitch that is lagging behind, it does work in line with Oxytocin (prescription that can only be obtained from a vet). NutriCal should be kept on hand for those pups that are active and prone to hyperglycemia, but used with caution, if not correctly used it can produce a hyperglycemic attack and promote diabitis. I prefer NutriDrops as it is immediately absorbed into the gums, faster working and only a couple of drops are necessary. There are many things to watch for in a whelping female and knowing how to care for her with proper nutrition is your key......Learning what to keep on hand in your medical supplies and how and when to use these meds is key to keeping your dam and pups alive. |

If I'm understanding correctly, Nutri-Cal is a sugary substance with a high glycemic value. It is best used to help regulate a pups blood sugar, which could be a problem during whelping, but is much more likely with the pups than with mama. The bitch normally requires more complete nutrition to keep her strength up. There is a recipe for a whelping pudding that uses goats milk in a sticky at the top of the breeder section. I hear that it's pretty good :) |

I guess we all do thing differently. I have always used Nutri-cal or Nutri-Stat during whelping. Often a momma dog will start throwing up during labor and I have found that a little Nutri-cal helps to settle their stomach. Once the momma starts having pups I with give the momma a little Nutri-cal throughout the delivery. If the mom has gone more than 45 minutes without delivering a pup I will then give them a little nutri-cal and usually within a short period of time the contractions will start again. You would never want to give Nutri-cal to a new born pup but it is okay to give them just one drop of the Nutri-drops. I highly recommend keeping the Oral-Cal Plus on hand. I have to admit I have never used the Oral Cal Plus since it came out but I always kept regular Oral-cal on hand but I would not use it during delivery. Before I have another litter I will be ordering the Oral Cal Plus, it sounds much better than regular Oral Cal. Also, I have never had to use whelping pudding so I can't comment on that. |
