Mixed breed puppies- please help!
 

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could help me as my chihuahua x yorkie is pregnant! She was not purposely bred, and I did not buy her from a 'designer' breeder she was a rescue puppy from the local RSPCA here in England. She was in her 3rd season when next doors dog got out and mounted her. He locked on and it was pretty distressing for my family as we had no intention to breed and at the time thought she was too young! We think she is pregnant now as looking into it she seemed to be in the correct breeding time, as she kept backing up at my neutered yorkie and mounting him. We have decided that if she does have puppies (which is most likely) we will keep them in the family, as my sisters have their own homes and would like one each, and my parents would like 1 or 2 depending on how many she has. She is 7lbs and the male is quite a bit smaller than her. My question is can anyone tell me what color the puppies are likely to be? We are really curious but I dont understand all the genetics stuff, I have had a look! Pixie is the yorkie tan color all over, with the odd stray dark grey hair down the middle of her back but really not noticable unless up close. Her dad was a chihuahua but I have little info on him other than he was tiny and her mum was a larger type of yorkie. Next doors dog looks really similar to her, he is a chihuahua x maltese! They apparently payed a fortune for him which is in my opinion stupid since he is a crossbreed and it encourages cross breeding! Anyway that aside, he is also tan all over, with more of a white undercoat type thing and white on his chest. Can anyone tell me what color the pups are likely to be? Like would 50% turn out full yorkie color since they are both half yorkie? Thanks in advance for any help! I'd just like to point out this breeding wasn't intentional and I am going to make sure we do everything we can to make her safe and comfortable. I'm pretty scared though! :(

I think rather than worrying about the way the puppies will look, you should be concentrating on getting ready for the puppies. Keeping mom healthy, and stocking up on supplies that you will need to get through the pregnancy and birthing, and through the first 14 weeks of these puppies lives.
Find a great vet with experience with small dogs and pregnancys in them. Try to find a small dog breeder who can help you through this. So many things can go wrong and you need to be prepared for it.
Has the RSPCA been made aware that not only did they adopt out an unneutered/spayed animal, but that it is already pregnant? Pretty sure that if the pet is unable to be fixed prior to being adopted (med reasons, too small, too young, etc) that there is something in the adoption form you fill out agreeing to have the pet spayed/neutered when possible. If there were medical reasons for not having her spayed you need to take her to the vet ASAP, those problems don't just go away and could be made worse with puppies on the way.

The possibility of any having the look of a yorkie is probably next to nill.

I would suggest that you begin obtaining any information on whelping, gathering your equipment and medical supplies. Contact your vet and make sure that the vet will be available to you 7x24. Also prepare yourself finacially for a c-section. Start your search for someone that is available to you to assist in the whelp. Contacting a local kennel club may be a place you can start in finding someone that is experienced in toy breeds.

Oh! first and foremost, get your girl to the vet and have her examined, an ultra sound would inform you if your girl has enough room to carry to term and of course whelp these pups naturally.

Hi, I am getting all that information now, I want to take her to the vets for lots of check ups and such too. I work at Pets at Home (I am 21, havent finished uni yet), and we are trained a lot on dog nutrition and stuff so I know about feeding her puppy food again but the rest i need to look into. I am really thorough about things so I will make sure we do whatever we can. I've read into whelping boxes and stuff but only just scratched the surface, it is quite overwhelming though! Like you say it is still dangerous, I'm just glad she isnt any smaller or it would be worse. When we got her she was too young to be spayed, only 4 months old. She was from a lady who had literally 50 or so dogs totally neglected. There were 5 in her litter. We were intending to get her spayed after this season, we meant to get it done before hand but got distracted to be honest and were reminded when she came into heat again! We rescued a yorkie at the same time who was already neutered, I believe they get them fixed generally as soon as possible at the shelter. As a rule we spay/neuter asap with out pets, we have 8 rabbits all done, the females cost around £75-90 each! But we don't want them breeding or fighting so we are happy to pay the costs. I will get onto finding a breeder to help me asap thanks, have booked her to go to the vets this friday just now. I just took a pic of next doors dog off facebook to show you if anyone is interested! And here is Pixie, she has been clipped as she is naturally long haired all over but more fluffy than silky. She is wearing a jumper... it was cold :) Ok i just put jumpers on her, no excuses lol. The dog is only 11 months old is there a chance he didn't get her pregnant? just read that a young dog is less likely to do it 'right' but it seemed to 'go in'!

You said she wasn't purposely bred? :confused: If you were standing right there you would have been able to stop the breeding process, saving your girl the possible problems of pregnancy.

Awww they are both very cute. If they locked then she is most likely PG. How long ago did they mate ? if in the last couple of days it's not too late to get her spayed. If that is not an option then Yes as others have said
Get ready for this pregnancy and delivery & make sure to have your vets # & the # to the nearest Emergency clinic on speed dial as you may need them when the time comes. There are many very knowledgable breeders on YT and I'm sure some will come on to advise you very soon. Please listen to their advice as they have dedicated their lives to doing what they do .

Just to let you know a pup can impregnate a female at 11 months of age. What you read is incorrect......

Don't worry about putting clothes on your girl, if she was cold, keep her warm.

Again, start gathering your supplies and begin preparing yourself for the possibility.

How the pups will look is anyone's guess because of the mixed breed factor.....just pray they are healthy and all goes well.

I'm surprised that the rescue didn't spay her. Is that not the norm in the UK?

She was just out in my yard on her own, and my mum happened to look out the window and shouted me as he was humping her. We ran out and he got off but his thing was like stuck in her!! For like 10 min we didn't know what to do I looked online quick and found on yahoo something saying its a tie and its dangerous to pull them apart but he 'let go' on his own. It was really strange! If that tie thing didnt happen we would have got him straight off and that would be the end of it. It was 6 days ago, that's too late right? I keep getting excited and scared at the same time lol. Like I said the shelter spay as standard as far as I know but she was too young at the time, normally they get older dogs. Plus my sister volunteered there for a while so maybe they didnt follow the same procedure for us... not sure. I would love the experience of having puppies but decided against it very early on because she is a mix and we didn't want her going through any stress or danger. Thanks so much for all your help, i will study the whelping articles tonight and from now onwards. Can she be spayed after a litter?

A breeding pair does not have to complete a tie to have a successful breeding.

By the way the female holds the male in place, so he didn't let go.

It is not recommended to spay until the pups are completely weaned. So, you'll have to wait until the pups are about 10 to 12 weeks of age to spay the mum.

Having 5 pups running all over the place would be the least of your concerns. Eclampsia would be at the forefront. Have to be extra deligent with the mum should she concieve 5 pups.
