I don't know what it means to have a good topline.

Anyone care to link or explain for me?

The 'topline' is the level of the back, it should be straight. From akc.org: "The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump."

On a side view from the shoulders to the rump should be level. Here is a picture of Bobby, he has a very straight level topline and it looks that way on the move around the ring not just stacked on the table.

This is taken from the standard

Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump. .
In other words: rump shouldn't be higher, shoulders shouldn't be lower or no dip in the middle. The tail should appear to be coming from the spine. It's said around the exhibitor circuit when describing a great topline "You drink tea off off the dogs back".

By well proportioned and very compact...the hight from the shoulders to the floor should measure the same distance between the base of the tail to the base of the neck. A very well balanced square dog.

This and other things add to a great moving dog.

Here is a good article that explains the Yorkshire Terrier standard and there are a few examples showing the correct topline, tail set and tail carriage, etc. As it explains in the article, it is easy to stack a dog to make the topline look straight but it is hard to hide a bad topline when a dog is moving or free stacking.

AND...the top line does not change with situations...when I was a novice I would hear people say the top line was off becasue the dog was nervous or stressed..whatever excuse...
A level top line stays level, no matter..if a dog can roach his back up in situations, the top line is just not correct....just as bad when it is down in the shoulders, but does look as bad...neither should be used for breeding.

To me it is the most important feature as a dog enters the ring...bad top line..I rarely take a second look...

Top Line is the most important to me.

There was a great article by J Amon breaking down a yorkie structure and how each contributed to the movement of the dog. If the dog isn't put together right it doesn't move right.

Although, I've seen some good handlers pull out a bad topline.......It's when the dog wasn't being messed with that the bad topline couldn't be hidden.

this is PERFECT! thank you! and thanks to all for the lessons. i am going to my first show next weekend to meet up with Deb Sillars and anyone else that is there. I believe Katie Davis will be ringside helping with something too. can't wait to learn more!

and learning about toplines made me realize just how bad Sadie's really is. her's is like the A in the example it's horrible humped in the middle.

i wish to goodness that poor rescue Bentley had AKC papers...he is BEAUTIFUL. more and more as his coat grows back in i'm seeing a beautiful Silky Terrier standard come out...it's a shame he's not going to go to any ring. but he does have his fair share of fancy little certificates coming in. he's CGC and AAA/AAT Registered with Delta Society. what a good boy! :D and Sadie is beautiful...but she's a MESS :rolleyes:

There is so much to learn about conformation. Even the best bred yorkies have faults, the goal is to breed yorkies as close to perfect as possible. I know you have lots of fun at the show. Hopefully you will be able to take some pictures to share.

This link had a lot of interesting and useful info. :thumbup: I always like comparing Uni to the standard, and laughing at her expense. :p The funny thing for her though, is when she's just standing, her back is hunched up, but when she's happy and trotting around, her topline seems pretty level. :confused: Doesn't matter anyway, she's not show quality, but it's kind of weird.

Once a person starts studying and understanding the correct structure of a yorkie or any breed for that matter it is hard to look at a dog without wanting to 'pick it apart'. I think this is a common practice among show people and not meant to be done in a mean manner but just a natural response, especially when looking at show dogs. All dogs have faults, some are just more obvious than others. Some faults are easy to hide with proper grooming and handling skills while other faults cannot be hidden.

For those that are interesting in showing and learning how to train a puppy for show this is a very interesting website. It does not pertain just to yorkies but it has just good basic information on training a puppy for show.

I know exactly what you mean! I pick apart costumes all the time. My bro does it to Power Ranger costumes haha. We're like, that's wrong, that's wrong, that's from a different character.... heh heh. I do it a little to yorkies too. Even when bf sees a beautiful one (according to standard) he's like wow...:eek: :D
