Day 55 , had an X-Ray today I took my pregnant Yorkie to the vet today for her scheduled X-ray. This is her first litter. It appears she is having three puppies. This is the first time I have taken a bitch to the vet for an X-ray, because she is a 5 pound dog I thought it would be helpful. The vet didn't measure anything, is this normal. He said since she is a small dog she may need a C-section. |
I would certainly ask the vet to explain why he did an x-ray if not to measure thier sizes, number and positions to see if she will need a c-section. Maybe he did it in his head, but he surely should be explaining to YOU since it is YOU who is paying for his expertice |
Puppies grow a lot the last days of pregnancy... Quote:

X-Ray pic from day 55 1 Attachment(s) If anyone can tell any additional information from this x-ray other than there are three puppies, please let me know. I am wondering if a skull could be hidden, it is hard to believe the pup in the middle and the one of the bottom are that long. Altought I have never been good at reading x-rays and ultrasound pictures. |
Congratulations on your upcoming trio!!! The xray is great, very definitely 3 puppies in there. I'm no vet and certainly can't read an xray as they can, but I do agree that the pups do look very long/big ....and then they come out so little. :p I've had xrays done each time I've had a pregnant female and each time though I did not see the vet measure, they've always let me know whether or not they thought the pups would pass through the birth canal with any foreseeable problems. Many 5 lb dogs whelp pups with no problems, just as any bigger dog might need a c-section. It just depends on the build of the female, the size of dogs/pups in the lines of your bitch/stud, etc. If all your vet said to you was "she's small so she might need a c-section", I would call them back and ask specifically that they look at them again and let you know what they thought about the skull/birth canal comparison. Good luck to you! |
I had an x-ray done on Molly when she was approx. 50 days along and the vet said there were 4. Well when she delivered there were 6! |

My vet said to come in at 50-55 days. I wish I would have waited until 57-58 days. |

Well my vet did an ultrasound and said she sees three puppies and that all looks good for the delivery |
Just a quick little note form 30yrs experience. I usually wait till about 59 days and always do 2 xrays. The one with Mom on her back will show you the size of her opening in relation to the puppies heads, the one on the side is usually a little easier to count puppies BUT my favorite is the one on Mom's back! Best of luck with your little one Sparklingbluyorkies.com |
To me the puppy in the middle appears to have 3 sets of legs. Which is probably a fourth puppy hidden in there, and their legs make up the 3rd set. Of course I'm not a vet, can't read x-rays...but that what it looks like to me. |
Xrays, when read by a professional tell you how many pups..and not a whole lot more. Puppies come heads or tails, either position is safe...it can take a bit more time for a feet first puppy...especially, with a first time whelping. I have had just as much trouble getting a big head out and as tiny feet first... Like the head of a human baby, the pups head is soft and maliable..I have seen huge heads in an xray pass easily through a opening smaller..measuring the size of the head and the pelvic opening is not a given..big head pass..big head get stuck..same with small heads.. If the pup comes feet first, you need to give it a few swings downward to clear any fluid..but I have needed to do that with head first also... If you have the good fortune of having pups all about the same size, you should be ok...trouble can come when there is a big one and it is first...but even then I have seen them pass with no trouble and the mouse behind it refused to budge...it is a pure crap shoot. I have seen bitches whelp one large pup and have a section with a tiny one...breeders are gamblers...best wishes... |
Thanks for all the advice, it has made me feel better about the x-ray. I know that delivery is just days away and I will have all the answers then. |
