Bad Breeder Possibly
 

Hi All,

I've had Dexter since Thanksgiving and as soon as we got him I knew something wasn't quite right. I was given him as a gift from my mother and sister to help get over the loss of my first yorkie, Napoleon, so I didn't actually get to go pick him out. They had the right intentions though so I don't blame them.

He came to me with yeast infections in both ears, kennel cough, worms, covered in fleas, and a soft spot on his head that is not going to close up. We took him to the vet the first week, he had an erie feeling as well and said my paper work was "sketchy at best" on his shot records, etc. At that point I was so upset with the breeder I called her. She was unwilling to reimburse for the vet bill and seem very uneducated. I told her I could smell how stinky his ears were when I first held him, she said "honey, my nose is so bad I couldn't tell you if I had a sink full of dirty dishes!"

People suggested I return him, but I just couldn't I'd already fell in love with him and in my opinion I rescued him from that awful place. His issues weren't that bad until Friday night he had a seizure. We took him back to the vet and will be doing blood work next week. From what I've read both the seizures and the soft spot are heriditary. Do you think this breeder is breeding less than quality dogs? If so, what should I do? Again, I don't want to return Dexter because we have given him a good home when other may give him up.

I am so sorry for you and your little Dexter. His breeder is grossly irresponsible for sending him to a new home with so many health problems, especially an open fontanel.

Someone with far more knowledge and experience than I have will be able to give you advice on how to proceed with the breeder.

oh my, i hope your little Dexx gets better soon! are his seizures treatable?

she does sounds like quite a horrible breeder- i couldnt return a pup to someone who reacts like that either (then again, i dont know if i could return a pup at all!), because i'd be horrified if someone found a single flea on one of my babies.
that is quite a list of problems, i hate to think what the others that are still there are like, in fact- i think id rather Not think about it...
im usually good at the benefit of the doubt, but at best she is breeding genetically defected dogs- and has been told about it- you did mention that to her, yea? so i would agree with your conclusion of a very neglegent bad breeder...
so the best thing i could think of- repost in the review section... that way, if nothing else, it may stop someone else buying a sick puppy off her. im sitting looking at my puppies right now, and it breaks my heart that some poeple would have had them off to new homes as long ago as 4 weeks!

was there any sort of health garentee? puppy lemon laws (i dont know anything about them, only what ive read on here)?...

and remember to be really careful of his little head- these babies are so fragile at the best of times... just walking into a chair could cause damage.

The finest pedigree puppies on earth can have worms, fleas, yeast, even a soft spot, but no reputable breeder would allow it out of their kennel..it would be treated, and the kennel to rid it of parasites and whatever is lurking...a puppy of any quality from any breeder should leave clean, health and vet checked...plain and simple.

I'd suggest you find a new Vet!

My vet is the best vet you could ever ask for! He met us on a Friday night at 7pm. He's also has met us on a weekend when one of our other dogs were attacked for no extra charge. We both work 60 hours this week and given this was the first episode and there hasn't been a seizure since we're ok to do it Tuesday, and trust me if there's another episode in-between now and then we'll go immediately. As of now Dexter is a happy as can be. I don't mean to sound defensive but Dr. Eric is great.

What can I do to have this breeder inspected at the least? Call animal control or the Humane Society?

I guess I should have added, "imo"...but, that's just me.

Well, you can try but, this is exactly why we always, always, always tell people to buy your breeder FIRST before your puppy...but, usually it just falls on deaf ears.

Since seeing it was your family who failed to do this...I don't know what to say...:confused:

I am a little confused by your story.......are you saying that he has an open fontanel? I would be extremely concerned if your puppy has not started to have seizures. There is a very real possiblity that he might have hydrocephalus which is too much fluid on the brain. This is not something to wait until next week for blood tests. Did you vet ever say that the open font had closed? If I were you I would be taking him back to the vet first thing in the morning.

First of all, welcome to YT. I hope you can get lots of information on our Forum. How old is your puppy? What are you feeding him? What did your vet say about the soft spot and the seisure? Seisures can sometimes be controlled with diet. I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I would call your local animal control and file a complaint. That should start the ball rolling. Please keep us updated...

Make sure the blood work you get done includes a Bile Acid test done to check for possible liver disease.

If your puppy is having seizures, I would be very concerned about a liver shunt or MVD, as seizures can accompany these conditions. You can do a search on "liver shunt" on here and learn more. It's sooo important to Bile Acid test your Yorkie! A liver shunt can significantly shorten a dogs life and you will need to have surgery done. I also agree that you should try to get bloodwork ASAP. I hope you can get in before the weekend.

Yes he has an open fontanel, however it only goes through one layer of the cortex, not both. Unfortunately, we're pretty sure it's not going to close up as he's 7 months old now. I don't think there is fluid on his brain from what I've read and been told if there was the spot would be somewhat bubbled up, so he doesn't think the two are related. He checks his spot everytime we go in for shots, etc so I sure hope he's right.

I've been reading quite a bit on liver shunt, Dr. Eric discussed that with me and we'll definitely be doing the Bile Acid test. The more I read about liver shunt the more nervous I become. He hasn't really showed other symptoms of it other than the seizure, but you never know. Just hoping for the best at this point, he really seems just fine since an hour after the seizure. Happy and spunky as usual :)

Oh megansmomma, now i'm more concerned about hydrocephalus. Sometimes I think the worst thing you can do is read online if you know what i mean.
