Puppy Poo
 
I have a litter of three yorkies - six weeks old today. I have come across something in the Poo area that I'm unfamiliar with. I started paper training them at 3 weeks. The smallest girl (little over pound currently) has had a problem pooing. When she first started going on her own, we noticed her trying with no luck. We figured she was just young and may still need her mom's help. This was not the case. Her poop was balling up by her bottom. Her poop continues to ball up and get caught in her fur. It makes her very uncomfortable. I give her but washes, and I have trimmed the hair by her anus (which she hated). Her brothers don't have this problem. Have any other breeders had this problem? Are there any remedies? My fear is she won't want to poo on the paper because it is uncomfortable for her and she'll try to poo somewhere else. Maybe oil her butt to keep the poo from sticking, but I'm not sure if that's safe for a puppy to ingest. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi, welcome to Yorkie Talk.:)

What is the consistency of her poop? Is the poop mushy or hard? If the hair on her anus is trimmed off and the poop is firm it should fall with no problem. If the stool is soft or lose it could stick some to her skin. It is hard for me to answer without knowing how her stool is.

I do know that some pups can tend to get constipated when going through the weaning process. If she is constipated then she needs more fluids. Make sure she has a small bowl of water available. Also a little corn syrup in the water will help soften the stool.

If her stool is loose or soft then that could be caused from over eating or from coccidia. Have you had her stool checked by a vet? If her stool is soft or mushy then I recommend you get her stools checked right away.

Thanks for the corn syrup idea. Her poo seems normal hardness - not too hard, but certainly not mushy. If by chance she did end up being constipated, would you try gel and a q-tip? Maybe she's constipated and bits are scooting around a blockage - they wouldn't be formed so maybe they would stick easier since they come out pre-squished. I just want to figure it out so I can stop it. On the bright side, they have their vet appt coming up soon. I'll keep you posted.

What kind of food are you feeding her? Is she straining to poop? It seems that if her poop was firm and the hair is trimmed then the poop would fall without sticking. If she seems to be straining to poop then I would get her to the vet.

how soon is the vet app? she could very well be in a fair amount of pain; do you really want to leave her like that for a few days? at this young age, bad experiences could have a negative association problem (like you were worried about with the paper) so if the app isnt today or tomorrow, moving it up may be in her best interests...
