confirmed retained placenta..need advice This is my first post on this website. Breeders please help! I have a female yorkie that delivered her puppies less than 48 hrs ago. She is a large yorkie and had 5 puppies. This is her 3rd litter and has always done well before. This time delivery was more difficult and I lost track of the placentas. Anyway, I went to the vet and he gave her a oxytocin shot about an hour ago. An xray showed possible placenta. He also gave her antibiotic and pain med. So far no placenta.Does anyone have any other advice on getting her to pass this placenta? Do you think the shot will help? Is there anything else I should be doing? |
How is she reacting? Eating, calm, nursing, normal temp? She no doubt passed it when you weren't looking...during the night etc... I do not recall a placenta not coming out of my bitches...some I saw and some I did not...a shot was given and then I watched them...temp etc..none had a problem with infection...so I am sure it passed without me seeing it... Plus she has had an antibotic shot for good measure...normal temp is your best guide. You can try massaging her belly like you are removing sauage from a casing...if you feel nothing, it is likely long gone...best wishes |

However, to the OP.....if she is acting out of sorts, not eating, temperature, lethargic, etc. There is another possibilty and I only mention it because it happened to me with one of my girls. She had an infection for an entirely different reason.....her horn was ripped. Ultra sound didn't identify it, blood count was normal....all showed great, except slightly anemic. She was put on IV fluids and massive doses of antibiotics for 3 days. I requested an emergency spay.....coagulation levels were down so it couldn't be performed or she would have bled out. She was kept on Baytril for a month, retested her coagulation levels and had her spayed at that time. You can also use Rasberry Tea. |
Thanks for replying. I thought the same thing. Actually 2 placentas passed almost 6 hours after birth. I knew something seemed strange. That was yesterday morning. Then all evening she would continue to pant off and on as if she was still in labor. This morning when I woke up she was panting and shivering and did not want to eat although I did get her to eatfrom my hand. This morning there also appeared to be more green discharge so I thought she passed it in the night. As the day went on she seemed better and stopped shivering . Her discharge does have an odor also. Our appt. was at 4:00 and at the vet she had 104 fever. The vet took xray and said it appeared to be... maybe a placenta. He said they may have to do c-section to remove it but could try shot first. We both agreed to try the shot first. He gave the shot about 5:45 and said the shot only lasts a couple of hours. I have not seen a placenta yet or even any contractions. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and had luck with the shot and antibiotic? |

What is her temp now? I do not like 104...it should be closer to 102 at this stage... |

Did the vet put her on antibiotics? Usually a clean out shot and antibiotics will do the trick. Like the others said, you don't always see all the placentas because mom will eat them and some are absorbed. In my 14 plus years of raising yorkies I have only had one female that got very sick from a retained placenta. In her case the vet had to flush out her uterus and she also had to have a blood transfusion but he was able to save her. The most important thing is to watch your girls temperature. She definitely needs to be on antibiotics. If her temperature continues to be high after being on antibiotics then I would not hesitate to get her back to the vet. |
Please be VERY careful....my Livi came close to dying (EXTREMELY close!!!) because she had a retained placenta. :( A temp of 104 is not something to be taken lightly. Livi was running 103.3, falling down, diarrhea, not eating. Her temp was even higher by the time she reached the vet and he told my husband (he's the one that rushed her in) that they would work their hardest to save her, but all were bad signs. I am not telling you this to scare you, even though I know it is frightening, but her temp makes me nervous. Keep us posted. |
It is 103.4. She does not seem any worse. She ate a little food and has been drinking her water and cleaning her babies. No evidence of a placenta and it has been almost 3 1/2 hrs. I am not too optimistic. |
Yes she is on an oral antibiotic, Clavamox (amoxicillin trihydrate/clavulanate potassium) and Rimadyl 25mg. |

How is she this morning? I hope her temperature has continued to go down. I pray momma and babies will be okay. |

I just want to comment that as a breeder I occasional will see a temperature spike after a momma has pups. I also monitor the temperature closely. I have learned to keep amoxicillin on hand and if a mommas temperature goes over 102.5 I immediately give the amoxicillin. In every case since I have started doing this the temperature will fall back to normal. The amoxicillin will also help if the momma starts getting a little mastitis. One thing that concerns me is the vet put the momma on Clavamox and Rimadyl. What I have read is that they should not be given to nursing mommas. Hopefully the pups are being bottle fed since the mom is on medication. My vet always recommends amoxicillin since it does not effect nursing pups. |

Normal temp, eating well...no foul odor to the discharge...I think she will be fine...just watch her. Xray are tricky things...and they are only as accurate as the person reading them..and I am not good at it..my daughter had a chest xray as a child..I saw a big, round dark area and freaked out...Dr said it was her heart. |

Thank you to all who replied over the weekend. This was my first time to post on YorkieTalk and I am so happy to report that my Bella is doing great! She no longer has any fever and seems very healthy. I did take her back in on Monday just to have her checked and the vet said she looked great. Also did an ultrasound...looked fine. Thank you God! Her puppies are so fat and healthy and now have had their tails docked. I guess my lesson to all who care to know is to go ahead and take them in for the clean out shot.As soon as possible! I do believe it helped, although I never did notice anything pass, like a retained placenta, but there definitely was fluid, which is still draining. Thankfully no odor and it seems to be drying up. Anyway, thanks so much to all who kept in touch with me, as I was very concerned, and as always, encountered an emergency after hours and on the weekend. Just remember too, you can always call the emergency number and they can help you decide when to load up your baby and head to the ER. Anyway, thanks again! Jennifer:) |
